GG Jackson undergoes surgery, Memphis Grizzlies provide timeline on potential return

Memphis Grizzlies forward GG Jackson underwent a successful surgery on Wednesday afternoon after breaking the fifth metarsal in his right foot.

Jackson will be reevaluated in three months and is expected to make a full recovery, the Grizzlies said in a statement.

The injury occurred on Aug. 27 while Jackson was working out in the Dallas area. He landed awkwardly on his right foot and needed further imaging done to determine the severity.

A three-month timeline gives Jackson an opportunity to position himself for a possible return in December. Memphis is still likely to have Jackson available for more than half of the season.

Jackson, 19, is entering his second season after a first year that started with little playing time. Injuries led to Memphis having to use Jackson more than anticipated, but the then-rookie surpassed expectations. He averaged 14.6 points in 48 games and was named to the second-team NBA all-rookie squad.

Expectations continued to increase after Jackson backed up his rookie year performance by being one of the top scorers in Las Vegas Summer League action. He was named to the All-Summer League first team after averaging 22 points per game.

The Grizzlies open training camp on Oct. 1 in Nashville at Ensworth High. Memphis will play its first regular season game on Oct. 23 against the Utah Jazz.
