Georgia football's new press box will be named after two well-known figures in UGA athletics
The names of longtime Georgia sports information director Claude Felton and the late Bulldog legend Dan Magill will be on the new press box opening Saturday at Sanford Stadium.
The 400 level section of the press box will be named Claude Felton Press Level. Felton retired after last football season after serving as Georgia sports information director since 1979.
The 500 level will be the Dan Magill Press Level named after the former Georgia SID, national championship-winning longtime tennis coach and executive secretary of the Bulldog Club.
Georgia will also honor Felton during the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Tennessee Tech.
"It's certainly something that was not expected," Felton said in a text message to the Athens Banner-Herald of the press box level named for him. "But it's very humbling and I'm honored to share the name with legendary Dan Magill."
Felton said he's grateful to athletic director Josh Brooks and UGA president Jere Morehead for the honor as well other ADs with whom he's worked.
"And to Coach Vince Dooley who gave me the opportunity to come to UGA," Felton said. "I have to say this is really not just a tribute to me but to the many staff members we've had in Sports Communications during my 40-plus years who have done remarkable work and many times been the ones responsible for making me look good."
Signage and photos of Magill and Felton will be displayed near the entrance of each level.
“Along with Vince Dooley, it would be hard to find two people who have meant more to Georgia Athletics than Dan Magill and Claude Felton,” Brooks said in a statement. “Coach Magill and Claude combined to serve this university for nearly a century. We are pleased to honor their remarkable accomplishments with the naming of the 400 and 500 levels of the new press box.”
Georgia's football press box moved from midfield to the southwest corner as part of $68.5 million worth of renovations to Sanford Stadium. The former press box was converted to high-end premium seating.
