Georgia football opens home schedule with big win against Tennessee Tech
Lining up against the No. 1 Georgia football team is something that probably wouldn't be pretty for 120 FBS teams this season.
Tennessee Tech drew that assignment Saturday and it went as you might expect for an FCS program.
Coach Kirby Smart said on his radio show Thursday night that the theme of the week was to “pursue better.”
So No. 1 Georgia’s opponent was its own standard rather than the Golden Eagles.
The Bulldogs walloped the visitors, 48-3, to extend the Bulldogs school record and nation-leading home winning streak to 26 games. It was the 13th straight home opening win for Georgia (2-0_. With the game out of hand, the fourth quarter was shortened to 10 minutes.
Here are three takeaways:
Georgia football's TD passing record is matched by Carson Beck
Georgia quarterback Carson Beck tied Georgia’s single-game touchdown passing record with five on a 37-yard third-quarter pass to Lawson Luckie.
He shares the record with eight others, including Stetson Bennett with five against UAB in 2021.
The Heisman Trophy contender completed his first 11 passes for 111 yards before overthrowing Arian Smith on a deep ball near the goal line early in the second quarter.
Beck thought his first throw of the game was too far, according to radio sideline reporter DJ Shockley, but it turned into a 22-yard touchdown on the left side of the end zone.
He finished 18 of 25 for 242 yards in a little more than a half of work. He got help from running back Trevor Etienne who rushed for 78 yards on 5 carries after serving a suspension last week.
“Carson does a good job, we gotta be a little more accurate down the field,” Smart told ESPN before heading to the locker room at halftime. “He’s done a good job getting the ball out of his hands, putting us in the right place.”
Defensive front spearheads shutout for Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia’s defensive front made their presence felt with their talent differential on display.
Especially defensive end Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins who had back-to-back tackles for loss in the second quarter and three of Georgia’s six in the first half. Georgia had 9 TFLs for the game
Christen Miller and defensive backs Joenel Aguero and KJ Bolden had the others in the first half. Miller and Bolden’s went for sacks.
Ingram-Dawkins has flashed during his Georgia career, but battled injuries.
Georgia held Tennessee Tech (0-2) to 52 yards and four first downs in the first half while the Bulldogs piled up 250.
Tennessee Tech drove the ball to the Georgia 11 and called timeout and booted a 32-yard field goal to end the game.
Gunner Stockton time comes in the second half
It sort of looked like a spring game crowd as Gunner Stockton helped close out Georgia’s blowout win.
The redshirt sophomore backup quarterback took over for Carson Beck with 11:20 to go in the third quarter.
Every opportunity for him to gets snaps adds to his body of work as Georgia will look for a new starting quarterback in 2025.
Stockton was 10 of 12 for 90 yards in mop-up duty playing with mostly backups. His long completion went for 21 yards and he was sacked once.
Stockton led Georgia on a touchdown drive that ended when Branson Robinson bulled his way in on a 13-yard touchdown run and on a fourth-quarter drive that ended in a field goal.
