Georgia football injuries: Kirby Smart keeps it close to vest on Christen Miller, others
No area of the Georgia football team has been hit harder by injuries than the defensive line.
The latest came Saturday in the Bulldogs’ 31-13 win over Auburn when starter Christen Miller exited the game with a left knee injury.
Coach Kirby Smart on Monday did not provide much of an update for the 6-foot-4, 305-pound redshirt sophomore when asked if he thinks that Miller and center Jared Wilson might be able to play in Saturday’s home game against Mississippi State.
"I hope they'll be able to," Smart said. "We'll find out today."
After the game Saturday, Smart said of Miller: "I thought he was fine. I mean, he had ice on his knee, and he played a lot in the game. So I thought at the point that he was not in, we were already playing other people. So we'll see."
Smart typically provided more information on injured players in his Monday press conference, but didn't for the second straight week. The SEC releases availability reports now starting Wednesday for each team before conference games.
Miller has 10 tackles including three for loss and a sack.
He played 27 snaps against Auburn and graded out highest among defensive linemen, according to Pro Football Focus.
Wilson, Georgia's center, missed the Auburn game with a foot injury and was replaced by Drew Bobo, who got his first college start.
Smart said Wilson was available for the Auburn game: “If (Wilson) had to be the backup and the emergency center, he felt like he could do that. So we were going to use him as that if we needed to."
As for inside linebacker Smael Mondon, he was on crutches and in a boot with a foot injury on Saturday, apparently sustained early last week in practice. Smart was asked about the specifics of Mondon's injury.
"We hope to get him back soon," Smart said Monday.
Jalon Walker started alongside CJ Allen at inside linebacker.
Raylen Wilson played a career-high 44 snaps and true freshman Chris Cole got early snaps and played 8 total against Auburn.
Georgia, still, is getting just limited snaps from defensive end Mykel Williams, a projected NFL first-round draft pick, who missed the first three games with a sprained ankle. He played 25 snaps against Alabama, but just six against Auburn, making a big third down tackle on quarterback Payton Thorne for a one-yard loss.
Defensive linemen Warren Brinson missed two games with an ankle/calf injury and Xzavier McLeod too with an undisclosed injury. Defensive lineman Jordan Hall, who has battled injuries to his legs, has still not played this season.
