Garrett Nussmeier's play, penalty concern ahead of Texas A&M in LSU mailbag post Arkansas
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The only award handed out after LSU football's demonstrative 34-10 win over Arkansas inside Donald Reynolds Razorback Stadium Saturday night was the Golden Boot Trophy.
But because of the six-game win streak the No. 8 Tigers are currently riding, there's some other hardware that's coming more in focus for them.
LSU (6-1, 3-0 SEC) is one of two teams in the SEC that are undefeated in league play and it meets the other, No. 14 Texas A&M (6-1, 4-0 SEC), next weekend in a big clash of some of the heavyweights in the conference this year.
Brian Kelly and the Tigers never trailed against the Razorbacks. Freshman running back Caden Durham rushed for three touchdowns, along with accumulating 101 yards on 21 carries, to lead the way in a bit of topsy-turvy offensive showing for the Tigers with junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier not throwing for any touchdown passes.

What's going on with LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier?
The way Nussmeier fired on all cylinders to open the season had Tiger fans thinking that was not going to be any lulls for him nor the passing game. Fact of the matter is the first five defenses LSU faced weren't world beaters.
And while Ole Miss and Arkansas aren't either, they were set up better to deal with athletes in space and were great tackling defenses.
To answer the question, nothing's going on with Nussmeier. His performance for nearly four quarters against the Rebels was a bit jarring but most expected another big outing against the Razorbacks. He went 22-of-3 for 224 against the Hogs but he was not put in ideal spots for the much of the night due to pre-snap penalties and adjusted playcalling to have to deal with it.
Nussmeier's performance at Arkansas feels less to do with him than the offense as a whole.
Is there concern about penalties ahead of LSU-Texas A&M game?
If I'm an LSU Tiger fan, I am extremely worried about the penalties. The environment at Arkansas last night is going to pale in comparison to what the Tigers are going to endure in College Station next Saturday night. The 12th Man is going to be fired up for a game that's got some serious implications to it for the first time in a long time.
Freshman center D.J. Chester had a rough go at Arkansas with a couple of snap infractions. That should be where the most concern lies as Texas A&M's defensive line is worth the price of admission.
LSU finished the night in Fayetteville with 11 penalties for 80 yards. If it duplicates that performance, Kelly's bunch could be in for a long night.
Has Will Campbell, Emery Jones Jr. and rest of LSU's offensive line turned a corner in run blocking?
Improving in run blocking was a major talking point, dating back to LSU's off week a couple of weeks ago. And while it was refreshing to see the rushing attack set the pace for the Tigers on offense, Arkansas is middle of the road in the SEC in rushing defense.
Because of that point, along with the fact that LSU just simply has the better unit in that matchup, it's hard to gauge how improvement the unit made.
What is encouraging is Durham and the running back rushing for 158 yards, averaging 4.3 yards per carry, is a benchmark that can create plenty of momentum and confidence. And that's exactly what LSU and the offensive line needs heading into A&M Saturday night.
