Gabby Williams' buzzer-beater against Team USA drew so many Kevin Durant toe comparisons in the gold medal game

Favored by 15.5 points going into Sunday's gold medal game against France, Team USA found itself in a tougher battle than anyone could have seen coming.

Gabby Williams put France her back, scoring a team-high 19 points in a defensive battle that wasn't settled until the clock hit zero. And even then, Williams very nearly extended the game a little longer.

With France down three and the clock winding down, she heaved a desperation shot at the basket that actually went in as time expired, probably to her own surprise. Unfortunately, she had already stepped over the three-point line, so the game ended instead of going into overtime.

The moment immediately drew comparisons to Kevin Durant's infamous shot against the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals, which would have gave the Brooklyn Nets a win if his toe wasn't just barely on the line.

Williams was more clearly over the line, but the massive stakes made the finish all the more dramatic.

Who knows if France would have knocked off the U.S. in overtime, but it has to burn knowing they came that close to finding out.
