FSU men's basketball plays St. Leo in exhibition, game supports Aubry Boyd Foundation
The Florida State men's basketball team hosts the first of its two preseason exhibition games at the Donald L. Tucker Center against St. Leo at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The game also celebrates the living legacy of former FSU player Aubry Boyd (1987-91) and annually raises funds for the Aubry Boyd Foundation.
Admission and parking are free.
Boyd suffered a broken neck while playing pick-up football with friends in his hometown of Macon, Georgia, in 1995 Initially he was paralyzed from the neck down but has since regained limited movement in his arms and legs."The support of the Florida State community means the world to me," Boyd told Seminoles.com.
"I played 25 years ago and to still have a turnout like there is every year with all the people remembering that I was a Seminole, is simply awesome. "I have great friends and boosters that continue to come for the game; it's unreal even though they may not know me personally. To see the coaches and the new ball players is just the greatest feeling in the world."The goal of the event is to raise $15,000.
Former FSU player Aubry Boyd thanks fans for their support
A number of FSU student-athletes will host a meet-and-greet from 6-7 p.m. in the main lobby of the Tucker Center to generate awareness for the Aubry Boyd Foundation.
Tax deductible contributions will be accepted in the Tucker Center concourse prior to the exhibition.
Boyd played in 116 career games for the Seminoles, averaging a career-high 11.8 points and 2.9 rebounds as a senior. He played on FSU's 1988, 1989 and 1991 NCAA Tournament teams under coach Pat Kennedy.
Boyd told FSU's website he's appreciative of the support from fans. "The financial support I have received over the years has allowed me to live my life independently," Boyd said.
"I've been provided with a van that I use in my everyday life. The van helps me get back and forth to doctor's appointments and the grocery store.
"It even helps me with equipment that is essential to my daily life, including my bed. The van is instrumental in transporting me to Tallahassee so I can show my gratitude to the people who have helped me on my journey."
The exhibition also gives fans a first glimpse of the new-look Seminoles under veteran coach Leonard Hamilton. Jamir Watkins, a 6-foot-7 senior guard, is the lone returning starter from last year's 17-16 team.
