Florida State football practice: High energy getting reach for Memphis | 4 things to know
All eyes have turned to Memphis for Florida State football as the Seminoles ramp up preparations for Saturday's showdown.
The Seminoles (0-2) kickoff at noon against the Tigers (2-0), who are ranked No. 25 in the US LBM coaches poll and unranked in the AP Poll. Facing his former team, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell felt FSU benefited from a bye week as his squad looks for the first win of the season.
"There is some similarities but also some differences. Defensively this is one of the more unique defense we are going to face," Norvell said after practice. "I thought the guys came out with good intent, I thought there were some good competitive periods and opportunities for us. Obviously we got to build on that throughout the course of this week for Saturday."
Here are four things to know from practice.
High energy, complete practice following the bye week
Norvell said he wanted his players to refocus and play more relaxed coming off the bye week, and during Tuesday's practice the Seminoles didn't have the energy of a team coming off a disappointing 0-2 start.
There was a good display of confidence in the reps, and while it wasn't the greatest practice, it was easily one of the best the group has had since the start of the season.
The big takeaway was how the team responded to the errors, while in recent practices it might have derailed the energy or effort a bit, on Tuesday the Seminoles turned up the energy and effort following a mistake.
The emphasis has been put on translating practice success onto the field, and Norvell was happy with the performance today but he wants to see it continue throughout the week.
There were some moments still where mistakes you don't want to see were made, but overall it was a strong display coming off the bye week.
DJ Uiagalelei, Brock Glenn, Luke Kromenhoak all have some strong moments
All eyes are on the quarterback position this week as DJ Uiagalelei looks for a breakthrough game against Memphis, and he had a solid day of practice on Tuesday.
Things started slowly with a couple of drops in the first drive of team activities, but Uiagalelei had some well-placed, and importantly, on-time passes to his wideouts. Outside of the first drive, the receivers turned it around and were able to complete catches well after too many drops against Boston College.
Uiagalelei had some moments where he overthrew his receivers on deep balls but in the short to medium range he was making good throws in tight coverage. There was a nice deep throw to tight end Kyle Morlock, who made a good catch in traffic and Uiagalelei also found Lawayne McCoy and Malik Benson on a couple of nice completions.
Following the struggles against Boston College it was a good day for Uiagalelei, its just now about translating the practice success into game success.
Brock Glenn popped up with some strong moments on Tuesday, making some nice throws and he was good when he ran the ball. There were some up-and-down moments, but it was a better day for Glenn as he made some aggressive throws that could boost confidence for the redshirt freshman.
Luke Kromenhoek displayed his talent with some impressive downfield throws, connecting well with his receivers on good-timed throws. It was an impressive day for the freshman who continues to showcase good development in practice.
Micahi Danzy makes an impression
The big change in the depth chart came with the elevation of true freshman and Florida High graduate Micahi Danzy.
Danzy replaced the injured Jaylin Lucas, who is out for the season, and in his first practice off the scout team, he made some impressive plays, drawing praise from Norvell and fellow freshman running back Kam Davis.
"Anytime a guy goes down there is an opportunity, a door opens. Micahi has really been coming along these last few weeks," Norvell said. "He has great talent, just some of the things and the consistency of it and that comes with learning and continued opportunities.
"I thought he did some really nice things today and I know he's going to work his tail off to be ready if his number is called on Saturday."
"Micahi is ready to work," Davis said. "I think he's ready. If he gets put out there and there is a blind spot I know he'll perform and I belive in his abilities."
While he is a running back by trade, Danzy made a great catch on a ball near the sidelines, adjusting his body mid-air to haul in the ball thrown by Glenn. He was mobbed in celebration by his teammates and coaches after the catch.
Defensive backs look sharp ahead of Memphis challenge
Memphis will provide the biggest test for the Seminoles' secondary so far, and in practice, the defensive backs have shown well with good coverage and some nice pass breakups.
Tuesday was another strong showing for the unit, and while there hasn't been a true passing threat to test them in game so far, players like Azareye'h Thomas, Shyheim Brown and Fentrell Cypress all have made some big plays in practice.
Thomas and Cypress were especially strong in coverage on Tuesday as they forced a few pass breakups with some impressive plays.
With Memphis likely to air the football out more, there will be a heavy dose of action for those two on Saturday, and it could be an opportunity for the duo to make a few plays and restore some confidence to the defense.
