FSU baseball pitcher Cam Leiter leading nation in strikeouts after opening weekend
UCF transfer pitcher Cam Leiter's 13-strikeout performance in Florida State baseball's 11-0 win over Butler on Friday is leading the nation in individual strikeouts after opening weekend.
In his Seminole debut, Leiter struck out 13 of 18 batters faced over five innings, sufficing just one hit, and propelling FSU to a season-opening victory over the Bulldogs.
The performance was a career-best for Leiter, surpassing his past total of 11 strikeouts in back-to-back starts against Tulane and Cincinnati with UCF last season.
In his one season at UCF, Leiter finished 3-2 with a 4.92 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 56.2 innings over 15 appearances.
His opening-day outing now ranks him as the strikeout leader in the nation. Cal Poly's Steven Brooks and Portland's Sam Suthr follow Leiter, both with 12 strikeouts in one outing.
Miami's Herick Hernandez was the only other ACC pitcher to crack the national top 20 strikeout rankings, recording 10 strikeouts over six innings in the Hurricanes' 16-0 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday.
Fellow UCF transfer and Florida High alumni Drew Faurot ranks seventh nationally in stolen bases per game, averaging 1.50 over two games.
As a team, FSU posted the fourth-best batting average nationally, batting .450, recording 30 hits in 74 plate appearances over the weekend.
The Seminoles had the second-best on-base percentage at .541 and are also tied for 10th in stolen bases with 11 in two games.
