3 takeaways from FSU baseball's season-opening series victory over Butler

A sweep is a sweep.

Though Saturday's game against Butler (0-2) was canceled due to inclement weather, Florida State followed its season-opening win Friday with a 15-5 victory over the Bulldogs Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium.

It was a dominant weekend with FSU controlling both games from start to finish.

"I'm overall happy two good games, you can see that we have a lot of options," FSU head coach Link Jarrett said. "I tried to make a point as soon as it separated a little bit. We did what we thought we needed to do to get some other guys chances to play."

Here are our takeaways from the Seminoles' season-opening series.

Perfect baserunning

The Seminoles were not shy when it came to their base running and Butler struggled to keep up with FSU's speed. As a team, it stole 11 bases on 11 attempts.

Seven stolen bases came in Sunday's game alone, led by Drew Faurot and Jamie Ferrer, both with two.

In just two games, FSU is almost halfway to its stolen base total from last season, which was 31 stolen bases in 54 games.

While the NCAA has not posted national leader stats yet, FSU could likely be one of the top base running teams in the nation later this week.

Newcomers post elite performances

FSU added 26 new players to its roster this offseason and a handful showed out in their Seminole debuts.

UCF transfer Cam Leiter dominated in game one, striking out 13 of 18 batters faced, allowing one hit and no runs over five innings.

Leiter's efforts opened up the game for Gulf Coast State College transfer Carson Dorsey and freshmen Rowen Hudson and Matt Sauser to make their Seminole debuts.

In game two, West Virginia transfer Noah Short, State College of Florida transfer Connor Hults and freshman Brady Louck all made their Seminole debuts on the mound.

"There's guys that deserve to be starting and playing," Jarrett said. "It's a tricky balancing act because we have a deep talented positional roster. We'll sort through that, and just continue to grow and evolve with it."

On the bats, Tallahassee Community College transfer Marco Dinges was three of three.

Later in the first game, right after Jordan Williams hit his first career home run, freshman Cal Fisher hit his first to put an exclamation point on FSU's 11-0 season-opening victory.

Local products Alabama transfer catcher Jaxson West (Chiles) and UCF transfer infielder Faurot (Florida High) both earned starts this weekend. West started in Friday's game. Faurot started at second base in both games.

A few returners had strong performances as well. Senior catcher McGwire Holbrook recorded his first career home run in game two off a three-run shot, totaled five RBIs in the game and was three-for-three at home plate.

"Holbrook had a really nice day," Jarrett said. "Poor guy last year was never really 100%. That's what he had done. If you look back on his career, he was that type of offensive player. It's good to see it today. In his first start, those were good at-bats off a variety of different types of arms."

James Tibbs III had four RBIs, all off a grand slam, in game one and added two more on Sunday.

Moving on from last season

It's still extremely early on in the season, but a dominant showing in Week 1 by the Seminoles coming off a down year is what just about everyone in and around the program wants to see.

In the first game of the season, FSU had already matched its shutout total from last season and is quickly creeping up on a handful of statistical marks from last year.

26 new additions have given this team a new look and one that encapsulates Jarrett's vision for this program.

There's still a lot that needs to be cleaned up, but things are looking bright for the Seminoles.

They are back in action on Tuesday at Jacksonville (2-0) at 6 p.m. The Dolphins won both of their doubleheader games against Cincinnati on Friday. Sunday's rubber match was canceled.
