Former Louisville basketball players returning to Freedom Hall in July for TBT regional
Any Louisville men's basketball fans up for another trip down memory lane this summer?
For the second year in a row, Freedom Hall will host a regional round of The Basketball Tournament, a 64-team competition with $1 million on the line. And a group of mostly ex-Cardinals, The Ville, will be taking the court.
The regional will be held July 19-24. Its winner will play the winner of a regional held at Rupp Arena — hosted by a Kentucky alumni team, LaFamilia — in a July 30 quarterfinal game.
Tickets are not yet available, but fans can sign up for a waitlist on TBT's official website.
Headlined by the likes of Peyton Siva, Russ Smith and Chane Behanan, The Ville as a No. 2 seed reached the regional championship last summer. It missed five consecutive chances at game-winning shots and fell to Gutter Cats, 64-62, four wins shy of the $1 million grand prize.
Siva is returning for another go-around.
"Playing at Freedom Hall last year was incredibly special," he said in a statement. "The atmosphere really felt like a true Louisville home game. I'm very excited TBT will be returning to Louisville and I can't wait for Cardinals fans to experience another great ride with us this summer."
Joining Siva this year is Montrezl Harrell, an eight-year NBA veteran who attended all of The Ville's games as a spectator last summer. Siva and Harrell were teammates during U of L's run to a Final Four in 2012 and a national championship in 2013.
Harrell underwent surgery last August to repair a torn ACL and a meniscus tear in his right knee. He hasn't played since the Philadelphia 76ers waived him before the start of the 2023-24 season.
"I can't wait to get back there," Harrell said in a video TBT shared on social media. "I can't wait to see you guys on the sidelines."
Louisville fans couldn't get enough of the action last summer after weathering the Cards' worst season in modern program history. The Ville's debut drew the fourth-largest crowd in TBT history (5,463).
"We are ecstatic to return to Louisville this summer," said Jon Mugar, the tournament's founder and CEO, in a news release. "The energy at Freedom Hall was raucous and reminded me of the Boston Garden in the 1980s. Plus, The Ville's Round 3 game got a 12.4 share in Louisville, which is a record for us. We are all-in on Louisville!"
Added David S. Beck, president and CEO of Kentucky Venues: "It was evident in 2023 that there’s a special place for Freedom Hall in the hearts of Louisville basketball fans as they filled the arena to watch The Ville compete in TBT. We’re excited to have the tournament back this summer and see iconic Freedom Hall in all its basketball glory."
The Ville will continue to build its roster in the coming months. More player commitments will be announced at later dates.
The other ex-Cards who suited up last summer were: Dillon Avare, Wayne Blackshear, Rakeem Buckles, Luke Hancock, Kyle Kuric and Chinanu Onuaku. Players also ranged from Chris Dowe, a Louisville native who starred at Bellarmine before taking his talents overseas, to Nick Mayo, a former all-conference forward at Eastern Kentucky.
Mark Lieberman is not returning as The Ville's head coach.
"Loved every second; just a lot of work and time involved," the former Rick Pitino staffer told The Courier Journal in a text message Tuesday. "I plan on being quite busy the next few months, so it's also a time issue. I'm sure the team will be in good hands."
