Florida State-Miami football history: Series record between Seminoles, Hurricanes

Throw out the records. Forget Florida State football has just one win, and No. 5 Miami is undefeated.

Trivial things such as records and rankings rarely matter when the Seminoles take on the Hurricanes.

Florida State (1-6, 1-5 ACC) travels to Miami Gardens to take on the Hurricanes (7-0, 3-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday. It will mark the 69th meeting between the two historic programs — and could significantly impact both Miami's race for the 12-team College Football Playoffs and the ACC championship. The Hurricanes, which joined the ACC in 2004, have never won the conference championship.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal already had a notable history vs. the Seminoles, even before he took over the program in 2022. He was 3-1 as a player for the Hurricanes against the Seminoles, then went 2-4 as an assistant coach before going 0-2 in his first two attempts as a head coach. Meanwhile, FSU coach Mike Norvell is 3-0 in the three games he has coached the Hurricanes (not including 2020).

Despite Miami entering the game Saturday as a 21-point favorite over FSU, per BetMGM, the history of this series has shown that one should disregard the betting lines and records and just enjoy another game that could potentially come down to the very end.

Here's a look at the series history between FSU football and Miami:

Florida State vs Miami football history

Saturday marks the 69th meeting between the two programs and the 21st ACC matchup. The Hurricanes hold a slim 35-33 lead over the Seminoles but have lost the last three matchups, including both under Cristobal.

The program's first meeting occurred in 1951. The teams' first conference matchup came on Sept. 10, 2004, when the Seminoles defeated Miami 16-10 at the Orange Bowl. The meeting was the third between the in-state rivals in less than 12 months, as the teams faced off on Oct. 11, 2003, in Tallahassee for a regular-season game and then on Jan. 1, 2004, for the 2004 Orange Bowl.

Until the 1990s, both teams were Independent. FSU joined the ACC in 1992, while Miami joined the Big East in 1991.
