On-field fight fallout: Jose Ramirez suspended 3 games, Terry Francona gets 1 game

The second that Jose Ramirez and Tim Anderson squared off with one another and threw punches Saturday, it was clear they'd be facing some kind of punishment from Major League Baseball.

On Monday the league handed down suspensions as a result of the altercation.

Ramirez, who dodged two punches from Anderson before landing a right cross of his own, has received a 3-game suspension. Anderson has been given a 6-game suspension. Ramirez will be appealing his suspension.

Additionally, Terry Francona, Emmanuel Clase and Mike Sarbaugh have all received 1-game suspensions. Francona and Clase will serve those suspensions Monday night. Sarbaugh will serve his Tuesday night. White Sox manager Pedro Grifol has also been suspended for a game.

Gabriel Arias has also been fined an undisclosed amount.

The anger began to reach a boil the night before the scuffle when Anderson applied a hard tag to Guardians rookie Brayan Rocchio, pushing him off the base. Rocchio was called out despite the push, and manager Terry Francona was ejected. The Guardians dugout, meanwhile, didn't appreciate the harder-than-usual tag.

Throughout Saturday's game, Anderson and Guardians infielder Arias were chirping at one another. Eventually, they were told to knock it off.

That led to Ramirez's slide into second base and another hard tag by Anderson, who then stood over Ramirez. A few seconds later, both were throwing punches and the benches cleared, leading to a 14-minute delay and six ejections. Players and coaches on both sides were fuming.

Ramirez said after the game that Anderson has been "disrespecting the game for a while," and that if Anderson's reaction is that he wants to fight, then, Ramirez "has to defend himself."

Anderson was not in the lineup for Sunday's game.
