East Peoria athlete is fan's choice for Peoria-area high school baseball player of the year
East Peoria sophomore R.J. Duncheon is the fan's choice for 2024 Journal Star baseball player of the year, according to a popular vote conducted this week.
Duncheon earned 55 percent of the 68,025 votes cast, beating out Peoria Notre Dame's Lawson Alwan (28 percent), Josh Vaughn of Illini Bluffs (9.9 percent) and Jack Piper of Dunlap (6.3 percent). The poll began Monday and ran through noon Thursday.
Duncheon hit .458 with 48 RBIs and 18 doubles. He was 8-2 on the mound with a 1.23 ERA for the Raiders, who shared the Mid-Illini Conference title.
Next week, the Journal Star will select its player of the year and the complete all-area team.
