The Atlanta Falcons drafted quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round, but don't expect the rookie to play much this season. After signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract, the Falcons can take their time developing Penix. So how much will each quarterback play in the preseason?

Head coach Raheem Morris discussed the team's plan at QB with reporters before Wednesday's open practice in Miami. "We haven't really talked about playing time, but you'll get a good look at Michael," said Morris.  "You won't see nearly as much of Kirk, if any."

Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's draft, has shined through the first few weeks of training camp. With Cousins sitting out for the preseason, Penix should get plenty of playing time. There's no reason not to let the rookie play as much as possible. If Penix is going to serve as the backup, he needs to get some experience in game situations.

Last season, former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith made the mistake of playing Desmond Ridder for just one drive in the preseason. It was clear he could have used the extra experience when the regular season rolled around, but Penix is in a much better situation.

We'll see the rookie make his NFL debut this Friday against the Dolphins. Check out Atlanta's first preseason depth chart and 90-man roster heading into the preseason opener.
