The Eli Manning, AJ Brown Ole Miss football records in danger of falling in 2024
OXFORD — Ole Miss football set a program record for wins in 2023 with 11 victories.
The Rebels will be looking to break that record in 2024. Ole Miss will open the season as the nation's sixth-ranked team, dreaming about College Football Playoff glory and maybe even a first trip to the SEC title game.
If the Rebels are to meet the lofty expectations they've set for themselves, they're likely to leave an impact on the record book in the process.
Here are three Ole Miss records that could fall in 2024.
Jaxson Dart could break TD pass record held by Eli Manning, Chad Kelly
Eli Manning and Chad Kelly jointly hold the Ole Miss program record for most touchdown passes in a single season, tossing 31 in 2001 and 2015, respectively.
It'll take a big jump for Jaxson Dart to surpass that total, but it's possible. Dart tossed 23 TDs in the 2023 season, up from 20 in 2022. Dart made his most significant progression from his sophomore to his junior season in the ball security department, cutting his interception total from 11 to five. To evolve into the Heisman Trophy candidate some believe he can be, he'll have to pair that reliability with explosiveness.
And he's in a perfect situation to do exactly that. The Ole Miss offensive line looks much improved. The Rebels boast one of the best groups of wide receivers in the country, headlined by Tre Harris, Juice Wells and Jordan Watkins. Caden Prieskorn should be one of the top tight ends in the game, too.
An exceptional season could also put the Ole Miss career passing TD record in Dart's sights. Dart would need 38 this season to tie Manning's career total of 81. Only nine SEC quarterbacks have ever reached that threshold.
Jared Ivey, transfers could lead Ole Miss to sack record
The NCAA didn't begin officially tracking sacks until 1983, and between 1988 and 1998 Ole Miss can't say for sure how many sacks it collected because of stat-keeping inconsistencies.
The 2024 Rebels look poised to make a run at the record from the stats available. Ole Miss produced 39 sacks in 2021, with Sam Williams leading the way with 10.5.
In 2023, its first season under defensive coordinator Pete Golding, the Ole Miss approached that total, getting to the quarterback 35 times. The Rebels return over half their sack production from a season ago, including their co-leader Jared Ivey.
They also bolstered their defensive front with transfers. Princely Umanmielen earned second-team All-SEC recognition at Florida last season and finished with seven sacks. Chris Hardie collected 8.5 sacks at Jacksonville State. Texas A&M transfer Walter Nolen came up with four sacks from his position on the interior and should be one of the best defensive tackles in the game in 2024.
If all the new pieces click, that record is in trouble.
Tre Harris could break TD catch record held by AJ Brown, Laquon Treadwell
Tre Harris began the 2023 season looking like he might reach beyond the Ole Miss record book and target the NCAA single-season receiving touchdown record set at 27 by Louisiana Tech's Troy Edwards.
Harris caught four touchdowns in his first game as a Rebel, then scored on the first drive of Ole Miss' second game at Tulane. Then injuries took their toll, and the touchdowns dried up. Harris finished the season with eight.
Despite Ole Miss' tradition of developing outstanding wide receivers, its single-season receiving touchdown record is somewhat attainable. AJ Brown and Laquon Treadwell share it. Treadwell caught 11 touchdown passes in 2015, with Brown matching him in 2017.
Harris could even reach for Brown's single-season receiving yards record, set at 1,320 in 2018.
