Would Lane Kiffin run two-tight end sets at Ole Miss? Dae'Quan Wright makes it possible

OXFORD — As Ole Miss football tight end Caden Prieskorn turned last season's Peach Bowl into his personal highlight show, Dae'Quan Wright watched from home as a highly interested, transfer-portal bound observer.

He liked what he saw.

"That kinda got my attention," Wright said Thursday.

Prieskorn racked up 10 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns in that Ole Miss victory over Penn State. It was an emphatic endorsement of what a tight end could do in the Rebels' scheme.

There was just one complication: Prieskorn was returning. But that didn't stop Wright from committing to Ole Miss less than two weeks later.

Why?

"I would just say Lane Kiffin and his past and what he did with tight ends and stuff like that. It was really him and how he used them," Wright said. "I watched Caden go crazy in the bowl game, how he was used and stuff like that ... With Caden being here, it didn't really bother me. With two tight ends, it's kinda scary in the offense."

The media tabbed Prieskorn as the preseason first-team All-SEC tight end last month, but Wright has proven himself at the power conference level, too. A junior, he took over the starting job at Virginia Tech midway through the 2023 season and caught 28 passes for 366 yards. At 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, he has the physique required to succeed in the SEC.

And he believes his skill set meshes well with Prieskorn's.

"My receiving, him in the core," Wright said. "His blocking ability, my ability to run routes, my speed, stuff like that. I just feel like that complements each other."

Could that cause the Rebels' coaching staff to opt for more two-tight-end sets this fall?

It's something quarterback Jaxson Dart teased last preseason with Prieskorn and Michael Trigg. But Trigg was off the team before the end of September, and Prieskorn struggled through the early part of the season with an injury that kept him out of three games entirely.

"Probably not until Week 6, Week 7, that's when I really felt like I was back to what I was before the injury," Prieskorn said last month.

Fielding two tight ends would force the Rebels to take a running back or wide receiver off the field, and Ole Miss looks like it has one of the best groups of receivers in the country, headlined by Tre Harris, Juice Wells and Jordan Watkins.

Still, the Rebels have shown a few two-tight-end looks during periods of practice open to the media.

"Being beside Caden, he's a great tight end, what he did last year," Wright said. "Being beside him is pretty good for me because it lets me showcase my talents. We complement each other on the field, so I think it's been pretty good."
