DJ Uiagalelei, FSU football's offense best day of fall camp among 6 things to know
Florida State football's offense is on the rise.
After a slow start to the week of fall camp, the Seminoles offense has surged with growing confidence, standing toe-to-toe with the defense during Thursday's practice. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei had arguably his best day and the wide receivers followed suit.
Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell felt his receivers had their best moments of camp this week.
"They have really raised the level of their game this week," Norvell said. "I thought they had another good day with the competitiveness between them and the defensive backs and how those guys are challenging and working with each other to get better."
With kickoff against Georgia Tech almost a week away in Dublin, Ireland, FSU's offense could be hitting form at the right time.
Here are six things to know from FSU football fall camp.
DJ Uiagalelei has his best days of camp, quarterbacks have good outing
There was a killer instinct about Uiagalelei today as he systematically led the offense to its best showing of the fall.
Uiagalelei was incredibly sharp in his decision-making and showed the ability to move around in the pocket and remain calm in front of pressure. He was zipping passes to his wide receivers in both drills and team activities, with his ball placement the best its been since the start of camp.
Early in the day, Uiagalelei had back-to-back impressive throws to wide receivers Ja'Khi Douglas and Malik Benson, placing the ball into the hands of his receivers as they finished their routes.
The performance from Uiagalelei mirrored that of what we saw at Oregon State last season, with the quarterback capping off a strong week of camp with an impressive showing.
Quarterbacks Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek weren't far behind Uiagalelei, as Glenn overcame a slower start to the day to have one of his better practices.
He looked calm and composed in team drills, working through his progressions quickly and he was not afraid to take matters into his own hands and run the football. Glenn was very accurate in the second half of practice, making some really good passes into quickly closing windows.
Glenn's best throw of the day came on a deep ball to Lawrance Toafili, placing it in a catchable spot on the sidelines, which allowed Toafili to secure the ball and get his feet down in bounds for the catch.
Kromenhoek flashed his deep ball a couple of times, with one deep throw to Jalen Brown in one-on-one work against the defensive backs maybe the best throw of any quarterback Thursday.
There has been a steady improvement from the freshman as things look to be slowing down a bit for Kromenhoek on the field.
Seminoles wide receivers answer Norvell's challenge
There was a moment during Monday's practice when Norvell seemingly challenged his wide receivers after having a poor start to the day. Since that moment the group has responded well, with Thursday the best showing from the unit as a whole this fall.
There were still some moments of inconsistency that needed work, with a couple of drops halting momentum, but overall the group was impressive.
Benson was the standout early on, with Douglas, Brown, Kentron Poitier, Darrion Williamson and Deuce Spann quickly coming up to the standard set by Benson.
In one-on-one drills, Benson made a couple of impressive grabs over the top of defensive back Azareye'h Thomas, with one sideline grab drawing a big reaction out of Norvell. Douglas was creating good separation on nearly every route and even made some good leaping grabs in team activities.
Spann and Brown were consistent throughout the day, the pair maybe didn't make the flashiest catches, but when the ball came their way it seemed like they had the safe hands to haul it in.
Freshman receivers Elijah Moore, Lawayne McCoy ascending
It wasn't just the veteran group of receivers making plays on Thursday, as freshman Eliajh Moore and Lawayne McCoy continue to impress with some big plays.
Both Moore and McCoy showed their craftiness with some impressive route running and catch radius.
McCoy got some early looks which he converted well, including one touchdown catch in one-on-ones in the redzone. The freshman made a nice, quick move to the outside to free himself from the defensive back and caught the touchdown pass from Glenn with ease.
Moore stands 6-foot-4 and his tall, athletic frame allows him to make some really impressive grabs, which he did on Thursday. There were a couple of catches from Moore where he showed his athleticism, keeping good control of his body will make in air grabs.
Offensive line ups physicality, have a strong day
The ability for Uiagelelei to have the day that he did started with good pass protection as the offensive line had a really strong day.
In team activities the linemen did well to keep the onrushing defensive linemen out fo the backfield, giving the quarterbacks time to make reads and connect on throws.
In pass protection drills, the offensive line won most of the reps Thursday, with Jeremiah Byers, Maurice Smith, Andre' Otto and Darius Washington all having some really strong performances in those drills.
There were a couple of occasions where the line withstood the quick and physical edge players like Patrick Payton and Marvin Jones Jr.
Cam Riley, Blake Nichelson led linebacker corps growing in confidence
There has been steady growth from the linebacker room this fall, with Cam Riley at the forefront of that.
The Auburn transfer has been an instant impact player for the defense, flashing his strength and speed in drills and team activities.
He was good in coverage, sticking with his man well and he was quick to fill gaps and get to the ball efficiently, having one of his stronger practices. Riley was also quick to make adjustments for himself and teammates during team activities, demonstrating good leadership on that end.
Nichelson was very sharp, moving quickly in drills and working well in coverage and run-stopping. It was an impressive day for the linebacker as he had arguably the best day alongside Riley.
Young defensive backs make an impact
The duo of freshman defensive backs Charles Lester III and Ricky Knight were a problem for the offense on Thursday.
Lester had the best day of the group, sticking in coverage well and nearly grabbing an interception off Uiagalelei after he broke from his man and jumped in front of the ball before it reached its target. He has been one of the more impressive freshmen this fall, with his play recognition on display.
Knight came down with an interception and nearly had two. In one-on-one Knight broke up a play, forcing the ball out of the receiver's hands and coming down with the bobbled effort, but his foot landed out of bounds. In team drills, he again was in the right place, being the first to react to a tipped pass, and coming down with the interception.
Both players were extremely strong in coverage against a variety of wide receivers.
