Vanderbilt football entered Saturday's season opener against Virginia Tech as the 13.5-point underdog, but new Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia didn't seem to care all that much about the spread.

The New Mexico State transfer proved why he more than belongs in the SEC during his team's surprise 34-27 victory over the Hokies, throwing for 190 yards on an efficient 12-for-16 in passing and two touchdowns.

He also led the team in rushing with 104 yards, including the game's winning touchdown in overtime.

Pavia is part of the New Mexico State contingency that came over to Nashville this past offseason, joining intriguing additions like former Aggies head coach Jerry Kill (a chief consultant to Vandy coach Clark Lea and offensive advisor) and assistant Tim Beck (Vandy's new offensive coordinator).

And, so far, that trio must be working some magic in Music City. Vanderbilt is 1-0 out the gate, and if the Commodores defense can settle in, they might be a feisty out in the SEC this fall. Is a bowl game a possibility?

At the least, Pavia looks like a breakout star and the best quarterback Vanderbilt has had in a long, long time.
