DeVonta Smith injury update: Former Alabama football WR takes scary hit vs Saints

(This story was updated to add new information).

Former Alabama football receiver DeVonta Smith suffered a scary injury during Sunday's Philadelphia Eagles NFL game against the New Orleans Saints.

Smith caught a ball from quarterback Jalen Hurts, another former Crimson Tide player, and when he turned up the field, was quickly swarmed by a pair of Saints players. The two defenders stopped his forward progress, but officials did not call a whistle, allowing New Orleans defensive lineman Khristian Boyd to come in and hit Smith from behind, knocking his helmet off.

Smith lay on the field for a few minutes, attended to by Eagles medical personnel as his teammates kneeled around him in his general vicinity. Smith eventually got up and was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. Boyd was not called for a penalty on the play.
