Now that the Detroit Tigers have advanced in the MLB postseason for the first time since 2013, it's time to ask the question: Who the heck is going to start Game 1 of the ALDS in Cleveland on Saturday (1:08 p.m., TBS)?

We know at least one pitcher it won't be: Lefty ace Tarik Skubal, who started Game 1 of the AL wild-card series in Houston and is likely unavailable until Monday's ALDS Game 2.

After that? Tigers manager A.J. Hinch is likely to stick with the opener/bulk-relief format he used to great effect during the team's 31-13 run to end the regular season. That could mean another start for lefty Tyler Holton, who pitched in both games of the AL wild-card series, but would have two days of rest — a relative vacation by his terms.

Alternately, Hinch could go with right-hander Reese Olson, who has been on a pitch limit since he returned from the IL last month. Olson hasn't pitched since last Thursday, when he started against Tampa Bay and allowed two runs over four innings and 72 pitches.

The Guardians, meanwhile, are likely to stick with a traditional starter setup in their 2024 playoff debut. Right-hander Tanner Bibee is the nominal Guardians ace; he posted a 3.50 ERA in three July starts against the Tigers this season.
