Detroit Tigers veteran Mark Canha leaves game early with right wrist soreness

Suddenly, Detroit Tigers veteran Mark Canha wasn't in the lineup anymore.

The 35-year-old exited in the fourth inning of Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with right wrist soreness, according to manager A.J. Hinch. The 10-year MLB veteran has played through a hip issue at times this season, beginning in early June.

The severity of the wrist injury is unclear.

"We're going to take no chances with that and get it checked out by the doctors," Hinch said.

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Mark Canha (21) scores a run against L. A. Dodgers after second base Colt Keith bats a double during the second inning at Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

Canha missed three games in a row before returning to the lineup for Friday's 4-3 loss to the Dodgers. He finished 2-for-2 with two walks as the designated hitter.

The Tigers replaced Canha — serving as the designated hitter once again — with pinch-hitter Jake Rogers in the fourth inning of Saturday's game at Comerica Park.

To this point, Canha has avoided the injured list.

The Tigers acquired Canha in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in November 2023, then picked up his $11.5 million club option for the 2024 season.

Canha is hitting .228 with six home runs, 38 walks and 65 strikeouts in 84 games, spanning 341 plate appearances. He entered Saturday's game with a .203 batting average and a .553 OPS in 54 games since May 1.
