Detroit Tigers' Tarik Skubal, A.J. Hinch provide health updates after comebacker off hand

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal dropped his glove to the mound and shook his right hand in pain during the sixth inning of Thursday's loss to the Colorado Rockies.

He had been hit by a comebacker.

The 27-year-old, who completed the inning, didn't return for the seventh, as the Tigers prioritized medical tests on his non-throwing hand. X-rays were negative, but he is scheduled to undergo further medical tests.

"It's a little sore, but I think I'm fine," Skubal said after Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Comerica Park. "I got some good news. Obviously, there's going to be probably some more tests done. But I'm not too worried about it."

For the comebacker, Brenton Doyle put the ball in play with a 71 mph exit velocity. The ball hit the bottom of Skubal's right hand, above his wrist and below the heel of his glove.

Skubal bobbled the ball and eventually caught it with his prized left hand, but after the play, he walked to the edge of the infield grass in front of second base.

Manager A.J. Hinch and assistant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades visited Skubal on the field. The three of them talked for a while, and after Skubal threw a couple of warm-up pitches, he was allowed to stay in the game to finish the sixth inning.

"When we were out on the field, he couldn't feel much, which is pretty scary," Hinch said. "That was a scary situation, and then obviously, you hold your breath until you get the full array of tests. It hurt, I know that. It's still a wait and see, although the initial tests are positive."

Skubal allowed one run on four hits and zero walks with six strikeouts across six innings. He didn't take the mound for the seventh, despite being at 84 pitches.

"I think it's just being a little smart," Skubal said. "It was obviously uncomfortable catching the ball more than anything, but I think I'll be fine going forward. I'm not really too worried about it."

Skubal has a 2.50 ERA in 29 starts.
