Detroit Tigers recall Spencer Torkelson after 58 games in Triple-A Toledo

Spencer Torkelson is back.

The Detroit Tigers recalled Torkelson, the 2020 No. 1 overall draft pick, from Triple-A Toledo before Saturday's game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park, according to multiple sources who were not at liberty to discuss roster moves publicly.

Torkelson, a first baseman, hit .239 with 11 home runs and a .799 OPS in 58 games for the Mud Hens.

Torkelson, who turns 25 in late August, hasn't played for the Tigers since June 1. On the next day, Tigers optioned Torkelson to Triple-A for the second time in three seasons.

After Friday's game, the Tigers optioned Bligh Madris, their primary first baseman against right-handed pitchers, to Toledo, which opened the door for Torkelson's return.

Torkelson, a below-average defender at first base, posted a putrid 30.9% strikeout rate throughout his 58 games with the Mud Hens, striking out 85 times in 275 plate appearances. The strikeouts are a big concern moving forward, despite other improvements.

The positive takeaway: Torkelson hit .268 with an .840 OPS and a 21.6% whiff rate on fastballs that registered at least 93 mph at the Triple-A level. Remember, Torkelson hit .131 with a .430 OPS and a 20.9% whiff rate against the same velocity at the MLB level.

His contact rate hasn't changed, but his quality of contact has significantly improved against high-velocity pitches.

The biggest concern: Torkelson struggled mightily against sliders as a member of the Mud Hens, hitting .197 with a 47% whiff rate. His .153 expected batting average on sliders was worse than his actual batting average. He displayed concerning swing-and-miss issues against changeups, as well.

Torkelson played 54 games with the Tigers during his first stint in the 2024 season. He hit .201 with four home runs, 16 walks and 56 strikeouts, posting a .597 OPS.

The Tigers had high hopes for Torkelson after he hit 31 home runs in 2023, his second of three MLB seasons. He has a career .218 batting average with a .683 OPS in 232 MLB games, spanning more than 1,300 plate appearances.
