Detroit Tigers' Javier Báez has 'different' back injury; Mark Canha needs wrist treatment

Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Báez (lower back injury) and outfielder Mark Canha (right wrist injury) avoided immediate placements on the injured list, but that might not have been the case if not for the All-Star break.

Both players exited Saturday's 11-9 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Comerica Park.

The All-Star break — Monday through Thursday — gives Báez and Canha a total of five days to recover from their injuries before Friday's series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, beginning a stretch of 12 games in a row.

"We're just going to take the time to rest," said Canha, suffering from right wrist soreness. "I'm going to get some treatment, and the plan is to come back after the All-Star break. I'll use up that time wisely to get some treatment on it."

Manager A.J. Hinch said Báez's lower back injury is different than the lumbar spine inflammation that forced him to miss a month of games while on the injured list, returning July 8. The new back injury isn't a setback as a result of the previous back injury.

The Tigers seem optimistic Báez won't need a stint on the injured list, but another back injury is concerning.

"It's a little bit different," Hinch said. "The news coming from Javy and from the doctors is encouraging, which is the (All-Star) break coming at a great time. Who knows how it would have been had we had a continual run of games.

"He was in better spirits than I thought he was going to be. I talked to him last night on the phone, and then I met with him again this morning. He seemed to be in a good place. Hopefully, this break is just a scare and not a recurrence of more issues."

THE RETURN: Tigers shortstop Javier Báez feels 'great' in return from injured list, rehab assignment

Both players talked about their injuries from Saturday's game before Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers, leading into the All-Star break.

Canha, 35, left the game in the fourth inning.

"I felt discomfort in my wrist," said Canha, who has treated a left hip injury multiple times without landing on the injured list. "I've been feeling it for a while. It was uncomfortable to the point where I couldn't really swing the bat with much ferocity."

Báez, 31, left the game in the sixth inning.

"I'm doing good," Báez said, who played just six games between the back injuries. "I still haven't done anything today, so I feel good. I'm not worried (about the injured list)."

THE STRUGGLE: Tigers' Mark Canha focuses on what helped him to 1,000 games amid two-month slump

Canha, making $11.5 million, is hitting .228 with six home runs and a .676 OPS in 84 games. Since May 1, he has a .202 batting average with a .550 OPS in 55 games. Báez, making $25 million, is hitting .179 with one home run and a .459 OPS in 59 games.

Báez felt pain in his back while swinging.

"He was more uncomfortable with his swing," Hinch said. "It's in a different place, so it's just something that we're going to manage and he's going to have to manage. He wanted to go out on defense, but that didn't make a lot of sense either."
