THIS TEAM HAS SOMETHING SPECIAL: Detroit Tigers remind how amazing and exhausting September baseball can be

Game notes: Somehow, someway, the Detroit Tigers are tied with the Minnesota Twins for the final wild-card spot in the American League.

The Twins lost for the third time in four games against the Guardians on Thursday while the Tigers had an off day, giving the Tigers the last half game they needed to even up the standings. That's the good news. The bad news is the Tigers still have some work to do since the Twins hold the tiebreaker by winning the season series.

Still, the Tigers could not have possibly hoped to be in a better position with just nine games left considering where they were just a few weeks ago.

After Thursday's off day, the work starts back up against the Baltimore Orioles, another team fighting for wild-card positioning. The Orioles have been among the top teams in the AL all year but have slipped behind the New York Yankees in the AL East race and still have to lock up their position as the top wild-card team.

That means they'll have plenty to play for when they host the Tigers in Baltimore this weekend.

The Tigers have just one starting pitcher named for this series and that is Reese Olson on Saturday. That means it'll likely be a mishmash of Tigers bullpen arms with some bulk relievers trying to help them get to the finish line on Friday, a strategy that has worked very well in getting the Tigers back into the playoff race.

With a win on Friday and a Twins loss to the Red Sox in Boston, the Tigers will control their own destiny for the final eight games.
