The Detroit Lions added depth to the quarterback position while Hendon Hooker continues his recovery from a concussion.

The Lions signed former Georgia and New York Giants quarterback Jake Fromm to the training camp roster. He joins Hooker and Nate Sudfeld in the quarterback room behind starter Jared Goff.

"We felt like he could come in and function" head coach Dan Campbell said Monday night. "We need somebody we felt like could work in the pocket. And fortunately, he was available."

Lions head coach Dan Campbell hinted at a potential addition before Sunday's practice in Allen Park, saying it will "come down to the wire" Sunday or Monday if the Lions were to add another QB to the roster.

Sudfeld, 30, struggled in the Lions' preseason opener, a 14-3 loss Thursday at the New York Giants. He played the entire first half, and then returned for much of the second half after Hooker entered concussion protocol. Sudfeld tore the ACL in his left knee in the Lions' preseason finale last August.

Hooker, drafted in the third round in 2023, made his NFL debut Thursday and brought some life to the Lions' offense before exiting. The 26-year-old QB suffered an ACL and meniscus tear in his left knee in November 2022 in his final season at Tennessee, and underwent surgery that December. A year later, he was activated to the Lions' roster as their No. 3 quarterback at the end of the season.

Fromm appeared in three games during the 2021 season with the Giants, including two starts. He was a fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2020 draft.

The Lions also signed Ty Summers and waived wide receiver Antoine Green and offensive lineman Ike Boettinger to make room on the training camp roster. Green was a 2023 7th round pick competing for one of the final spots on the wide receiver depth chart but picked up a concussion in the first preseason game against the Giants.

"We felt like this was the best thing on our end for him," Campbell said. "... We didn't want to do this but its a tough injury."
