Detroit Lions rookie OT Gio Manu 'starting to get more of the big picture,' still inactive

Rookie offensive tackle Gio Manu is inactive for the seventh time in as many games this season today against the Tennessee Titans, but Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley said he's pleased with the growth the Lions' fourth-round pick has shown in practice.

"He’s progressing with the consistency of the play (and) starting to get more of the big picture, too," Fraley said Friday. "When things move pre-snap, what’s happening? Where does the call need to adjust to? Do I need to adjust? I think the play speed has definitely picked up over time."

The Lions traded up to get Manu in April's draft, targeting him as a developmental prospect at offensive tackle.

Starting tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker signed contract extensions this year through at least the 2027 season – the last year on Manu's rookie contract – and Dan Skipper has been the Lions' swing tackle every game this year.

For now, Manu gets most of his work on the scout team in practice.

"Our defense does a lot pre-snap movements and all this, pressures, so he gets – he’s learning on the fly here and he’s playing faster and making calls and stuff," Fraley said. "So that’s where I think he’s progressed a lot more than what you saw in training camp. It was, 'All right, let me get my first couple steps down, let me see this.' Now it’s seeing, 'Oh, adjust, here’s our adjustment to it.' without relying on (somebody) to make the calls so he’s gotten better there."

Along with Manu, defensive end Josh Paschal (medical), offensive lineman Colby Sorsdal, tight end Parker Hesse and safety Loren Strickland are inactive for the Lions (5-1).

Mason Rudolph will start at quarterback for the Titans (1-5) with Will Levis inactive.
