Detroit Lions, RB David Montgomery agree to contract extension through 2027

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery runs with a ferocity that perfectly represents the identity the team has come to embrace, and Lions general manager Brad Holmes doesn't want to see him walk out the door any time soon.

The Lions and Montgomery have agreed to an extension that will keep him in a Lions uniform until 2027. The deal has not been signed yet, but is agreed to in principle.

Montgomery joined the Lions in the 2023 offseason, replacing fan-favorite running back Jamaal Williams on a three-year deal worth $18 million.

Later that offseason, the Lions drafted running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round to form a backfield that has already become one of the best in the league in a little over a year together.

Gibbs and Montgomery have mostly shared the workload, but together they have formed an extremely formidable running game that the Lions rely heavily on.

Last year, Montgomery rushed for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns; Gibbs added 945 yards on the ground and 10 more touchdowns.

This season, Montgomery has picked up where he left off, rushing for 271 yards and four touchdowns through four games this year, most notably icing the first game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams in overtime, carrying the ball five times and scoring the winning touchdown.

Exact figures on Montgomery's deal have not yet been confirmed, but he will be in a Lions uniform through at least 2027.
