Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff named NFC Offensive Player of the Month in October
Jared Goff has been awarded for his torrid stretch over the past month as he has led the Detroit Lions to a 6-1 record this season.
On Thursday, the Lions quarterback was named the Offensive Player of the Month in the NFC. He joins injured pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson as Lions to win a Player of the Month award this season; Hutchinson won for September. They are the second Lions teammates to win the award in the same season, joining Barry Sanders and Ray Crockett in 1991. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson won the award for the AFC.
Goff led the Lions to a 3-0 record in October as part of a current five-game winning streak. In the past four games including the Monday Night Football win over the Seahawks on the last day of September, Goff has completed 70 of 83 pass attempts (84.3%) for 972 yards with 10 touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also caught a touchdown vs. Seattle.

Goff is the third Lions player in franchise history to win an Offensive Player of the Month award, joining Hall of Famers Calvin Johnson (2x in 2012 and 2013) and Barry Sanders (4x in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 1997).
Goff, who signed a four-year, $212 million contract extension in the offseason, is in the midst of some of the best football in his career as the hub of a Lions offense that leads the league in scoring (33.4 points per game) and efficiency (touchdowns on 35% of offensive drives).
"We have a quarterback right now who's playing smart, sound football," offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said Thursday in Allen Park. "He's taking care of the ball. If it presents it to him down the field, he'll throw it. He's got no problem ripping a dagger or throwing a post down the field."

The key to his recent success, Johnson said last week, has been predicated on limiting turnovers and getting it to a bevy of playmakers quickly. The result has been four straight 30-point performances and one of the most efficient quarterback stretches ever.
"He has just stayed true to what the play calls for and we’ve been able to find open receivers and it’s been a good thing so far," Johnson said. "None of us are surprised. I mean, he’s put stretches of this together in training camp, and so we probably didn’t start the season quite as hot as we wanted to, but this is really what we expected going into the year.”
Goff will look to try to continue his hot play against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Green Bay's defense turned Goff over four times last year, including forcing three fumbles in a win in Detroit on Thanksgiving.
