Detroit Lions make it official, place Aidan Hutchinson on IR

The Detroit Lions officially placed Aidan Hutchinson on injured reserve Tuesday, two days after he broke his leg in a win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Hutchinson fractured two bones, the tibia and fibula, in his left leg in the third quarter of the Lions' 47-9 victory. Lions coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Hutchinson faces a four- to six-month timeline for recovery, but the team is still keeping the door open for a postseason return.

The Lions also placed defensive tackle Kyle Peko on IR Tuesday, and signed defensive end Isaiah Thomas off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. Peko tore his pectoral muscle trying to make a one-handed tackle in the first half of the Cowboys game.

The Lions (4-1) have suffered significant losses this season on a defensive line that looked to be one of their deepest position groups heading into the year.

Along with Hutchinson and Peko, starting defensive end Marcus Davenport tore his triceps in a Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals and is out for the season, and defensive tackles John Cominsky and Brodric Martin are on IR and haven't played this year because of training camp injuries.

Martin is close to a return, Campbell said last week, while Cominsky won't be back until December at the earliest.

The Lions currently have two open spots on their 53-man roster.
