Detroit Lions' Aidan Hutchinson to debut at Rocket Mortgage Classic celebrity scramble

Tom Izzo, Calvin Johnson and Chris Webber will have a new competitor in the annual AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble at Detroit Golf Club as part of the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Aidan Hutchinson, still the toast of the town after helping the Detroit Lions end a 32-year playoff winless drought in January, was announced Thursday as a participant for the fun, three-hole event on June 25.

Hutchinson, whose image towered over downtown Detroit on a skyscraper in April as the city hosted the NFL draft, made the Pro Bowl last season as a 23-year-old. He collected 11½ sacks in 17 games during the regular season for the 12-5 Lions, who eventually lost in the NFC championship game.

Johnson — the Lions Hall of Fame receiver — returns for a third year, alongside the decorated Webber — a Basketball Hall of Famer, Michigan Fab Five star and Detroit native — who returns for a second straight year.

Izzo, the longtime Michigan State basketball coach, and his team have won the past two celebrity scrambles, and this will be his fifth appearance — he has not missed one. Collin Morikawa was the Tour pro on Izzo's squad last year, and nearly won the Rocket Mortgage Classic days later.

The action consists of six four-player teams competing in a three-hole exhibition match over holes 14 through 16, known as AREA 313: No. 14 is a par-5 with a two-tier green fronted by a man-made pond; No. 15 is a short par-3 with bunkers short and left; No. 16 is a par-4.

A PGA Tour player captains each team and is grouped with three other participants who are either current or former athletes, players from The John Shippen Invitational, entertainers and corporate partners.

The celebrity scramble tees off Tuesday, June 25 at 5 p.m. from Detroit Golf Club, with all fans gaining free admission and parking at Detroit Mercy (4001 W McNichols Rd. with a shuttle to and from Detroit Golf Club).

Two additional celebrities will be announced at a later date.

The next day, June 26, PGA Tour pros play in the nine-hole Pro-Am, also free to fans.

The PGA Tour returns to Detroit Golf Club for a sixth year for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, June 27-30.

Last year was perhaps the most exciting yet, with fan favorite Rickie Fowler breaking a four-year Tour winless drought to score victory in epic fashion in a three-man playoff with Morikawa and Adam Hadwin.

Fowler will defend his title in less than one month, with competitors including fellow PGA Tour winners Tom Kim and Will Zalatoris. More field commitments will be announced in the coming weeks.
