Decision reached on status of Georgia football wide receiver Colbie Young after arrest

Georgia football wide receiver Colbie Young is suspended indefinitely, coach Kirby Smart said Wednesday, a day after the Miami transfer’s arrest.

Young was jailed and then released on bond on misdemeanor charges of assault on an unborn child and battery in an incident with a female who described herself to police as an ex-girlfriend.

Smart said he met with Young on Wednesday morning.

“He’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved,” Smart said. “We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it, but had a good meeting with him this morning.”

The female accuser had a bruise and discoloration on the bottom of her chest where it meets the abdomen and redness on her right flank, police said in an incident report. The woman told police Young picked her up and squeezed her torso and abdomen very hard at his apartment.

Young told police he did not grab the accuser.

“We’re committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents,” Smart said. “It’s very unfortunate but we want to be responsible in decision-making on an off the field and this is obviously a really tough situation.”

Kim Stephens, Young’s attorney, said in a statement that Young was arrested “after he asked his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment. He did not make physical contact with her in any way that could even be considered a crime. I expect Mr. Young to be fully exonerated once our investigation is complete and the truth is revealed.”

Young, in his first season with the Bulldogs, has 11 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns.
