'He decided the Indy 500 was more important': Joey Logano discusses Kyle Larson's double
Kyle Larson has won two NASCAR Cup races this year and stands third in the points. Normally, that qualifies him for the Cup playoffs.
However, he missed the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday after finishing 18th in the rain-delayed Indianapolis 500. NASCAR rules dictate that a driver must compete in every race to qualify for the playoffs, unless they obtain a waiver.
Two-time NASCAR Cup champion Joey Logano calls the Larson situation the "the grayest rule we have in our sport."
Speaking on SiriusXM, Logano notes that drivers have received waivers after sustaining racing injuries and off-track injuries.
Here's the key difference in Larson's situation, according to Logano: "He decided the Indy 500 was more important than the Coca-Cola 600. ... That's the facts."
More Kyle Larson: 'I hope it’s not the last opportunity I have to try the Double.'
Logano acknowledged that many people were involved in Larson's decision-making process, and that attempting the Double "was the most badass thing that anyone can do."
Larson drove at Indy after a 4-hour rain delay, finishing at about 7:45 p.m. The Cup race was underway as Larson flew to Charlotte, hoping to join the Cup race for the final stage. However, rain washed out the race before he could climb into his car.
Larson will have to seek a waiver to be included in the Cup playoffs. Should it be granted?
"I don't know where you go with that," Logano said.

Logano later posted on social media that he believes Larson should get the waiver.
If anyone listened to what I said yesterday, I never picked a side. I was pointing out the tough decision that NASCAR is in. Since words have been twisted yet again….here’s what I think…
What Larson did for Motorsports was amazing, and he should get the waiver. https://t.co/CTQgapivci— Joey Logano (@joeylogano) May 29, 2024
