David Jones to keep name in NBA Draft, will not return to Memphis basketball

David Jones will keep his name in the NBA Draft, bringing his Memphis basketball career to an end.

Jones acknowledged ESPN's report Wednesday on social media, posting "con Dios y el jefe," which translates to "with God and the boss." A source with direct knowledge of the situation, who requested anonymity because no official announcement has been made, also confirmed the news to The Commercial Appeal.

The 6-foot-6 Jones was the Tigers' leading scorer and rebounder last season. The Dominican Republic native went through the NBA's pre-draft process, participating in the draft combine in Chicago earlier this month. Despite an underwhelming performance there, Jones is ready to begin his professional career.

Formally losing Jones is a significant development for coach Penny Hardaway. The first-team all-AAC performer was sixth in the country in scoring last season (21.8 points per game), a top-10 rebounder in the AAC (7.6) and finished tied for the fifth-most made 3-pointers in single-season program history (79). He also contributed 1.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

Last season, Jones became the first Division I player since Zion Williamson in 2018-19 to average at least 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals per game.

Jones’ decision also means Memphis is in line to return just one scholarship player − forward Nicholas Jourdain − from 2023-24.

But Hardaway and his staff have already welcomed a host of roster reinforcements. The Tigers’ incoming transfer class ranks among the top 15 in the country, according to 247Sports and EvanMiya.com.

Hardaway has signed a host of transfers, including guards Tyrese Hunter, PJ Haggerty and Baraka Okojie, as well as wing Colby Rogers, and big men Dain Dainja, Tyreek Smith and Moussa Cisse. Memphis has also signed incoming freshman guard Jared Harris.

All eight of those players, along with Jourdain, reported to campus earlier this week for summer workouts, which are set to begin Saturday.
