Dabo Swinney on Jake Briningstool becoming Clemson football's reception leader among tight ends
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Clemson football's Jake Briningstool became the Tigers' all-time receptions leader for tight ends in Saturday's 24-14 win vs. Virginia Tech.
Briningstool surpassed Jordan Leggett after he recorded his 113th reception in the third quarter. Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik passed to Briningstool in the flat, and he broke two tackles and dove into the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown.
Briningstool finished Saturday's game with three catches for 39 yards and the score. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney spoke about Briningstool's impact postgame after he broke the record.
"It's hard to do something that's never been done," Swinney said. "We've had a lot of great tight ends, but I'm really happy for that young man. He's worked really hard, and he's chasing that touchdown record, too."
The touchdown was Briningstool's 15th, three shy of Leggett's record of 18. Briningstool tied his career high of five for touchdowns in a season. He is also third in career receiving yards by a Clemson tight end.
Briningstool has amassed 35 catches for 388 yards and five touchdowns in nine games this season.
