Replay: Diego Rossi scores back-to-back goals as Columbus Crew top Inter Miami 3-2

It seemed as though Inter Miami had sealed the deal and punched its ticket to the Leagues Cup quarterfinal after taking a 2-0 lead against the Crew in the 62nd minute of their match. But a goal from Christian Ramirez and two from Diego Rossi in the span of 13 minutes kept the Crew alive as they advanced in the tournament with a 3-2 victory.

Miami, which was without star forward Lionel Messi, scored the first goal of the match in the first 10 minutes. Holding that lead going into halftime, midfielder Diego Gomez scored Miami's second goal at the 62-minutes mark.

It was five minutes later that Ramirez, who was a halftime substitute, put life into the Crew lineup with a header goal to cut the lead to one. Two minutes later, Rossi tied the game 2-2.

The game remained tied until the 80th minute, when Rossi scored his second goal of the night and secure the win. This is the second match in a row Rossi has scored two goals.

Crew goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen recorded two saves.

The Crew advance to the Leagues Cup quarterfinal and will face the winner of the Tigres-New York City FC match at Lower.com Field on Saturday.

Forward Diego Rossi has scored back-to-back goals for Columbus to give the Crew a 3-2 lead. Midfielder Mo Farsi was credited with the assist after dumping a short pass to Rossi in Miami's box. Taking one dribble, Rossi was able to score his second short-distance goal.

In the manner of five minutes, the Crew went from being down 2-0 to tying the match against Miami 2-2. Forward Diego Rossi scored the second goal for Columbus off an assist from Cucho Hernandez.

Hernandez sent a cross-pass into the center of Miami's box, and while forward Christian Ramirez jumped as if he was going to attempt a second header shot, it went pass Ramirez and to the foot of Rossi, who found the short-corner of Miami's goal to tie the match.

A header goal from forward Chrisitan Ramirez cuts the Crew's deficit against Miami in half, putting the score at 2-1 Miami. From the top, left corner of the box, midfielder Max Arfsten sent a pass into Ramirez, who was standing right in front of Miami's goal and was able to time his header attempt to score.

Striker Luis Suarez was credited with the assist, finding Gomez on the opposite side of the box. Miami lead 2-0.

The Crew had a corner kick opportunity, the first of the second half, after Miami hit the ball behind the goal line. Forward Diego Rossi took the kick for Columbus, making a short pass to midfielder Alex Matan at the top right corner of the box. Matan attempted to send the ball to the Crew's frontline near the goal, but had his pass deflected by Miami.

Rossi executed the kick, and before Crew defender Steven Moreira used the opportunity to make a play on the ball, goalkeeper Drake Callender grabbed it, giving Miami back possession.

Inter Miami was awarded a free kick following a foul called against Sean Zawadzki on midfielder Yannick Bright. Off the free kick, Crew midfielder Max Arfsten cleared the ball out of bounce past the goal line, giving Miami a corner kick.

Matias Rojas took the corner and sent it far, inside Columbus' box, allowing for Diego Gomez to get a header attempt that goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen snatched before it could find the back of the net.

Miami was able to score the first goal of the match when forward Matias Rojas found the back of the net with a header shot, giving Miami a 1-0 lead.

Crew goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen was focused to his right when Miami midfielder Diego Gomez forced a turnover on the left side of the field, but instead of a shot attempt, Gomez sent a cross to Rojas, allowing for an easy goal.

"I was hoping that Messi could play, because this would be the first time (we face him)," Nancy said. "But this is not possible for the moment."

How did Columbus Crew do in 2023 Leagues Cup

The Crew started the 2023 Leagues Cup in the Central 1 group with St. Louis City and Club America.

After defeating St. Louis 2-1 in their opening match of the tournament, the Crew faced Club America, one of the top teams in Liga MX, on the heels of Columbus announcing the transfer of their star midfielder Lucas Zelarayan to Saudi Pro League's Al Fateh. Hours after the announcement, the Crew picked up a 4-1 victory over Club America.

Columbus went into the knockout stage with home field advantage in the round of 32 against Minnesota United. The two clubs finished regulation tied 1-1, sending the game straight to penalty kicks. With misses attempts from Kevin Molino, Steven Moreira and Malte Amundsen, the Crew fell to Minnesota 4-3 in penalty kicks and were knocked out of the tournament.
