The Crew were able to advance in the tournament by defeating NYCFC in penalty kicks 4-3. The game was sent to penalties when regulation ended in a 1-1 deadlock, with New York City's goal coming from Alonso Martinez at the 14-second mark, the fastest goal ever scored against Columbus.

With a chance to reach their second tournament final this season, the Crew are facing the Philadelphia Union in the Leagues Cup semifinals at Lower.com Field at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. And unlike the Crew's tournament games against Inter Miami and New York City, Columbus' challenge is to avoid being forced to build a comeback and striking first in the meeting with Philadelphia.

"Usually, I like to say to my players no matter what type of game, it's 0-0," Crew coach Wilfried Nancy said. "But we started the game 1-0 the last game. But to be honest with you, I took this opportunity, when we conceded the last goal, to reinforce what we want to do on the kickoff."
