Columbus Crew trade Will Sands to New England Revolution for defender DeJuan Jones
The Crew traded midfielder Will Sands to New England Revolution for defender DeJuan Jones, the club confirmed on Wednesday. Along with Sands, Columbus is sending New England up to $600,000 in general allocation money, with $300,00 guaranteed for 2024 and $300,000 in 2025. Columbus will regain $100,000 if Sands meets undisclosed performance metrics with New England.
Jones has made 142 appearances for New England since being drafted in 2019. During the offseason, Jones re-signed with New England through 2027, and is making $793,246 this season.
In January 2023, Jones made his United States Men's National Team debut during a friendly against Serbia. Jones was also on the USMNT roster for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup and recorded an assist.
"DeJuan has the skillset and versatility we desire within our style of play,” Crew general manager Issa Tall said in a statement. “He has proven his ability to defend and create chances in the attack from both sides of the pitch."

Sands had been with Columbus since signing a homegrown contract with the Crew ahead of the 2022 season.
At the start of the 2023 season, Sands was seeing a significant amount of playing time before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in April. Returning at the beginning of 2024, Sands made just six regular-season appearances for Columbus, with midfielder Max Arfsten replacing Sands at left wingback in the starting lineup.
