This is further than Columbus went in the 2023 Leagues Cup. During the inaugural year of the tournament, the Crew lost to Minnesota United in penalty kicks 4-3 in the round of 32.
Philadelphia also advanced on penalty kicks on Saturday, when a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation against Liga MX's Mazatlan FC forced the shootout. The Union won 4-3 in penalty kicks.
The match Wednesday will be the first between the Crew and the Union this season. Their MLS regular-season matchup is scheduled for Saturday, but with the winner of Wednesday's Leagues Cup matchup going on the tournament final on Sunday, Crew coach Wilfried Nancy is hoping that the Aug. 24 game is pushed back to a later date.
