Cleveland Guardians vs. Arizona Diamondbacks recap; Guards lose both games of doubleheader

CLEVELAND — They'll play two today.

The Guardians and Diamondbacks were rained out Tuesday, setting up a traditional double beginning at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Carlos Carrasco and Ben Lively are slated to take the mound for the Guardians.

Today's doubleheader puts the Guardians in the odd position of playing two games Wednesday and then, after an off day Thursday, they'll again play two in Minnesota to begin a four-game series against the Twins Friday.

Follow along here for live score updates, analysis and highlights from Wednesday's games.

Guardians lose to Diamondbacks

With the bases loaded and two outs, Martinez struck out Lane Thomas on three pitches to end the game. The Guardians lose 5-3, and they've now dropped five consecutive games heading into a key, four-game series against the Twins in Minnesota.

Guardians have possible rally going in ninth inning

The Guardians have brought the potential winning run to the plate.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Jhonkensy singled to reach base. With one out, Andres Gimenez grounded a ball back to Diamondbacks reliever Justin Martinez, who had a chance to end the game with a double play.

Instead, Martinez bobbled it and then essentially threw it into the ground for an error, allowing both runners to be safe.

Bo Naylor followed with a strikeout, and Daniel Schneemann drew a walk to set up Lane Thomas with the bases loaded and two outs.

Lane Thomas makes catch at the wall

Lane Thomas saved at least one run with a leaping catch in which he crashed into the wall hard enough that his hat flew off, nearly turning a double play in the process.

Thomas' ability to play center field, thus adding additional flexibility, was part of the allure of the Guardians trading for him before the deadline.

The Guardians trail 5-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Jose Ramirez blasts home run No. 30 of 2024

Jose Ramirez has secured a 30-homer season with a solo shot to left field that has cut the Guardians' deficit to 4-3 in the sixth inning.

This is the third time Ramirez has reached the 30-homer plateau, along with 2018 and 2021.

With Josh Naylor on third, Angel Martinez brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, cutting Arizona's lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning.

Josh Bell has multi-home run game

Josh Bell hit four home runs at Progressive Field with the Guardians, and he's now reached half that total in the last hour with the Diamondbacks, as he slugged a two-run shot that gives Arizona a 4-1 lead.

David Fry hits solo home run to cut Diamondbacks lead in half

David Fry joked the other day that he might have forgotten how to hit home runs, but he's done it again with a solo shot to the bleacher seats in left field off Eduardo Rodriguez to make it a 2-1 score.

Fry's assault against left-handed pitchers continues.

Adrian Del Castillo first career hit is an RBI double

Adrian Del Castillo recorded his first career hit and RBI in one swing with a run-scoring double that puts the Diamondbacks up 2-0 against Carlos Carrasco.

Carlos Carrasco makes behind-the-back play

Carlos Carrasco pulled off a highlight-reel play, snagging a ground ball behind his back in the second inning for an out.

Josh Bell blasts home run off Carlos Carrasco in second game of doubleheader

Josh Bell only hit four home runs at Progressive Field during his time with Cleveland, but he has one today for Arizona, as he belted a solo shot off of Carlos Carrasco in the second inning to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead.

Guardians lose to Diamondbacks in first game of doubleheader

The Guardians fell to Arizona 7-3 in the first game of today's doubleheader, making it four consecutive losses for Cleveland. Meanwhile, Arizona has now won 11 of their last 13 games.

Carlos Carrasco will take the mound for the Guardians in the second game. No official start time has been announced yet, but it should be around 4:30-4:45.

Ketel Marte blasts home run

Just a few moments ago, the Guardians had the potential tying run in scoring position. Now, they're backsliding into a fourth-consecutive loss, as Ketel Marte just crushed a two-run home run off Anthony Gose to extend the Diamondbacks' lead to 7-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Jose Ramirez RBI single brings Guardians closer

Diamondbacks reliever Dylan Floro nearly hit Jose Ramirez in the head with a 91 mph pitch, brushing the Guardians' All-Star third baseman to the ground. A few pitches later, with two runners on, Ramirez lined a single to right field to make it 5-3 with runners on the corners for Josh Naylor in the eighth inning.

Ramirez then stole his 25th base of the second, putting the potential tying run on second base, with Angel Martinez on third, with two outs and Naylor still at the plate.

Naylor later grounded out to end the inning, and the Guardians will head to the ninth trailing 5-3.

Eugenio Suarez doubles off the wall

The wind might have helped him out a bit, and Eugenio Suarez has an RBI double off the left-field wall to extend Arizona's lead to 5-2 in the eighth inning.

Anthony Gose is now entering his first mjor league game since July 2, 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Ben Lively's outing is done after five innings

Ben Lively's day is done after five innings. He gave up four runs via two two-run home runs and struck out two hitters. Eli Morgan is coming in.

Even though today is a doubleheader, the Guardians are off tomorrow, which gives them a bit more leeway with their bullpen usage.

Corbin Carroll defensive highlight, double play ends fifth inning

Corbin Carroll made a tremendous play to end the fifth inning and end the Guardians' rally.

With one out, two runners on and Bo Naylor at the plate, Naylor hit a flyball to shallow right field. Carroll charged in and made a sliding catch for the second out. While he wasn't too deep in the outfield, once he had to slide, Daniel Schneemann took off from third, but Carroll delivered a perfectly placed throw to throw him out at the plate.

The Diamondbacks will head to the sixth inning with a 4-2 lead over the Guardians.

Brayan Rocchio RBI double cuts into Diamondbacks lead

After being hitless through four innings, the Guardians are rallying against Brandon Pfaadt.

With two runners on, Brayan Rocchio ripped a double down the right-field line, scoring one to make it 4-2 while putting two runners in scoring position for Bo Naylor and then the top of the Guardians lineup.

Josh Naylor home run ends Brandon Pfaadt's no-hitter bid

With one swing, Brandon Pfaadt's bid for a perfect game, a no-hitter and a shutout are all gone.

In the fifth, Josh Naylor launched a solo home run, his 25th of the season, to make it a 4-1 score. That's home run No. 25, which is a career high.

Andres Gimenez later singled, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.
