How Clemson football QB Cade Klubnik has leaned on Trevor Lawrence, other NFL sources to improve

CHARLOTTE — Clemson football quarterback Cade Klubnik knows 2024 is a massive year for him and the Tigers.

So much so, Klubnik has tapped into a plethora of resources to help him improve physically and mentally. Some of those names include former Clemson quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.

"Not as much like work out, (but) I've talked to Deshaun and Trevor a little bit each," Klubnik said. "They're both chasing their NFL careers right now, so they don't have a lot of time to come back to Clemson and train with me."

Klubnik said he has a mentor in former Super Bowl champion quarterback Nick Foles, who like Klubnik attended Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. Klubnik also spent time at the Manning Passing Academy in June, where he said he learned "cheat codes" from quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. Those teachings include manipulating linebackers and safeties to come toward the line of scrimmage and getting wide receivers open on play action.

Klubnik also has spoken to Super Bowl champion coach Pete Carroll about how quarterback Russell Wilson responded to adversity during games and how he inspired his teammates to battle when things didn't go their way.

"It's been awesome to have people like that that I can reach out to that truly understand what I'm going through and what the game is," Klubnik said.

All the advice Klubnik has taken this offseason is in hopes to make him more comfortable in his second full season as a starter and Clemson eyes a return to the College Football Playoff. He recorded 2,844 passing yards with 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions as the Tigers finished with a 9-4 record last season, which was their fewest wins since 2010.

The Tigers' performance resulted in the team missing the ACC championship and the CFP for the third consecutive season.

Clemson returns 10 players who started on offense and eight on defense in 2023, and it added the 11th-ranked recruiting class in 2024, per the 247Sports Composite, that included two five-star players.

The Tigers will begin preseason practices next month as they prepare for their opener against Georgia on Aug. 31.
