Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney explains why his weekly radio show won't have live callers
CLEMSON — Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney explained Tuesday why his first radio show of the 2024 season had no live callers.
Swinney said his viral five-minute rant last year in response to a caller named "Tyler from Spartanburg" wasn't the cause of the change but admitted it didn't help matters. Rather, he said it was something already brewing with Clemson administration.
"Internally, they've been talking about it for a while to make a change to the format," Swinney said. "Really looking at what most other people were doing, being able to take more questions, talk more ball."
Monday's edition of the "Tiger Sports Hour with Dabo Swinney" recapped Clemson's win in the Gator Bowl then went into dialogue between Swinney and host Don Munson. Viewers could text questions to The Roar's text line, and Munson read them to the Tigers' coach rather than phone call conversations.
The format change is similar to what Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell did last season with his radio show: “Tiger Sports Hour with Brad Brownell." His show included conversations about previous and upcoming games and featured appearances from current players, staff members and guests but no live callers.
Swinney will make an appearance Monday at 8 p.m. ET after No. 14 Clemson plays No. 1 Georgia on Saturday (noon ET, ABC) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
