If Wednesday’s German Cup match between high-flying Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund and second-tier Union Berlin is any indication, Christian Pulisic is close to being back to his best.

The 20-year-old American, who has been slowed by injuries through the early part of the 2018-19 season, scored for the first time in more than a month. He would add an assist later before drawing Dortmund’s game-winning penalty deep into extra time.

Pulisic’s goal came five minutes before halftime, after Mahmoud Dahoud found Shinji Kagawa with a pinpoint cross. Kagawa’s powerful header was well saved by Union keeper Rafał Gikiewicz, but Pulisic darted in to beat defender Christopher Lenz to the loose ball and stab it across the line.

Berlin leveled the match through substitute Sebastian Polter midway though the second half, only for Pulisic to help the hosts regain their lead just 10 minutes later, with Maximilian Philipp blasting the winger’s perfectly weighted pass past Gikiewicz:

Polter pulled the visitors level again with just two minutes to play, sending the match to extra time. But just when it appeared that the contest would be settled on penalties, Pulisic was hauled down in the box by defender Marvin Friedrich. Marco Reus converted from the spot to keep Dortmund unbeaten in all competitions.

Leg ailments have limited Pulisic to just four league starts Dortmund this season. He was near the top of his game last month, scoring in consecutive matches — including a Champions League winner on his birthday — before a calf tear sidelined him for four weeks. He missed five games in all, including a Champions League tilt versus Monaco and U.S. national team friendlies against Colombia and Peru.

Dortmund will put their unbeaten run on the line when they travel to Wolfsburg on Saturday, where Pulisic will go head-to-head with U.S. defender John Brooks.
