Chase Elliott fuming after penalty drops him from third in Brickyard 400
INDIANAPOLIS — Chase Elliott was given a penalty in the Brickyard 400 for a blend line violation.
NASCAR felt Elliott — the driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet — blended back onto the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track off of pit road.
NASCAR sent a memo to drivers on Saturday morning saying, “Vehicles must use the acceleration lane through the exit of turn two.”
NASCAR sent updated language to the drivers yesterday morning to clarify the pit road acceleration lane rule. This is what was sent. Portion officiated for 9 and 6 penalties is 'stay off the racing surface.' pic.twitter.com/3LplnZbv6s

“That’s not right,” Elliott said on the radio after the penalty. “I did exactly what the (expletive) sheet said to do.”
The controversial penalty set back Elliott, who began the race at third. But he’s back in the top five at the race’s 72nd lap.
