Nashville Predators lose third in a row, fall behind LA Kings in wild-card race
Before the Nashville Predators faced the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday at Bridgestone Arena, new Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan paid a visit to the home team's locker room.
With an audience of Predators cast eyes upon him, Callahan read the team's starting lineup. Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea also was in attendance for the Predators’ 4-3 loss.
The Predators and Kings were playing for playoff positioning in the Western Conference. Both teams began the game in a three-way tie with the St. Louis Blues atop the Western Conference wild-card standings with 54 points. The Blues did not play Wednesday.
Carl Grundstrom’s goal at 8:51 of the first period put the Kings ahead 1-0. Alex Turcotte’s first NHL goal 5:36 into the second made it 2-0.
Predators forward Cody Glass looked to have tied the score, but the goal was overturned after the Kings successfully challenged for offside.
Filip Forsberg finally put the Predators on the scoreboard with his 24th goal of the season 5:15 into the third.
Trevor Lewis answered with another Kings goal with 6:40 remaining to make it 3-1.
Philip Tomasinso’s seventh goal of the season, and second in two games, pulled the Predators back to within one a little more than three minutes later but former Predator Kevin Fiala put the game away with 1:09 to play.
Predators defenseman Alexandre Carrier did not play because of an upper-body injury. He is day-to-day, the team said.
Nashville (26-22-2) has lost three games in a row and four of five, including a 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa on Monday when it blew a 3-0 lead. The Kings (23-15-10) had lost four in a row and six of seven.
