CEC football takes PCL playoff game, holding Neumann-Goretti scoreless
FAIRLESS HILLS — You could almost feel a statement being made as Conwell-Egan junior lineman Chase Walters was attacking the quarterback in the third period on Friday night. The statement: no scoring is going to be done against us.
Thanks to a vicious pass rush and solid play overall on the defensive side, the Eagles romped to a 21-0 victory over visiting Neumann-Goretti (4-6) in the Philadelphia Catholic League Class 3A championship game.
Conwell-Egan (7-3) will face the Public League 3A champion, either Simon Gratz or High School of the Future, for the District 12 title on Nov. 9 at the South Philadelphia Super Site (noon).
In eight quarters of play against the Pirates, the Eagles have yet to give up a point (having won 14-0 in the regular season).
The first half was a defensive struggle as Egan led just 7-0 at halftime. The only score came when coach Jack Techtmann went for it, facing fourth down and six, at the Pirates' 25-yard line with two minutes left in the half. A pass from Aubrey Kimbrough to junior Abu Fofana gave them the score.
Walters said he was not surprised Techtmann went for it.
"Not at all," he said. "Coach trusts us to make the play."

A 6-foot-3, 262-pound junior, Walters plays right tackle on offense and strongside end on defense.
He sacked Neumann quarterback Rausheen Lively on third down on the first two possessions (the first sack he shared with Gus Pope) of the third quarter.
"It was just a straight pass rush, nothing fancy," said Walters. "We knew they were passing from their alignment, just got to him."
The sacks set the tone as the Eagles defense was not letting Neumann get any traction on offense.
However, the Pirates' defense kept the pressure on the Eagles offensive line, but it held strong.
"They blitzed a lot," said Walters. "They kept sending the house. We had to handle it."
Walters, who went to public school in the Pennsbury School District through eighth grade, knows the team has much improved since a mistake-prone, 21-14, loss to Lansdale Catholic on Sept. 14.
"Honestly, I think the LC loss helped us," said Walters. "We didn't come in with the intensity we need to play with. You could see the difference on the sideline (Friday). Everyone is excited (and) totally into it."
