Carson Spiers lands on injured list after matching Hunter Greene by starting game with six straight strikeouts

One day after a stellar performance, pitcher Carson Spiers landed on the injured list on Saturday with a right shoulder impingement, but he wasn’t concerned about missing much time.

With the All-Star break coming up, Spiers will only miss one start. Reds manager David Bell said the plan is to have Spiers throw one bullpen game in late July before having him return to the rotation near the end of the month.

When he’s healthy, Spiers has cemented his role as the Reds’ No. 5 starter. He beat out Graham Ashcraft for that spot, and now Ashcraft is out until September with an elbow strain.

In a corresponding move, the Reds called up reliever Tony Santillan.

Before Thursday, five years had passed since a Reds starting pitcher had struck out six straight batters to start a game. Then it happened in back-to-back games.

On Thursday, starting pitcher Hunter Greene struck out the first six batters he faced against the Colorado Rockies. Then on Friday, struck out the first six batters he faced against the Miami Marlins.

Starting pitcher Carson Spiers struck out the first six Miami Marlins batters he faced on Friday and a career-high nine overall. Saturday, he was placed on the injured list with a shoulder impingement that neither he nor Reds manager David Bell believe is serious.

Spiers mixed five different pitches and showed impressive command during his strong start. He earned a spot in the Reds' rotation with his strong production this season, and Spiers has been the Reds' most consistent rookie in 2024.

Marlins left fielder Nick Gordon led off the third inning Friday night by grounding out to Elly De La Cruz at shortstop to end the strikeout streak.

Before Greene's start on Thursday, the last Red to start a game with six strikeouts was Anthony DeSclafani on June 23, 2019 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
