Bills vs. Jaguars score: Buffalo offense nearly perfect in masterful win

ORCHARD PARK - Week 3 of the NFL season features a Monday night doubleheader and the Buffalo Bills are hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars get things started in Highmark Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

At 8:15, the Cincinnati Bengals welcome the Washington Commanders, so with the staggered starts, NFL fans can switch back and forth between the games like they do in the 1 o’clock window on Sundays.

Thus far, Week 3 has been highly unpredictable and among the craziness from Sunday, the hopeless Panthers somehow stomped the Raiders 36-22; Brian Daboll’s previously helpless Giants knocked off the Browns 21-15; and the Rams rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 6:18 to stun the 49ers 27-24.

Regarding the Bills, the Seahawks laid waste to the Dolphins without Tua Tagovailoa in an easy 24-3 victory, and the Vikings handed the Texans their first loss in a 34-7 blowout.

All this to say that nothing ever seems quite like it is in the NFL, so the Bills need to be wary of the back-to-the-wall 0-2 Jaguars who are will be in desperation mode Monday night.

Final score: Buffalo Bills 47, Jacksonville Jaguars 10

The Buffalo Bills put the rest of the NFL on notice. Buffalo scored touchdowns on its first five possessions in the first half and obliterated a team on primetime for the second straight week.

Josh Allen completed 23 of 30 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns. Buffalo rookies Keon Coleman and Ray Davis scored their first career touchdown. Bills safety Damar Hamlin made his first career interception and Buffalo's defensive recorded five sacks.

Buffalo improves to 3-0 and travels to play the Baltimore Ravens at 8:20 p.m. on Sunday Night Football.

Buffalo Bills 47, Jacksonville Jaguars 10: Ray Davis scored first career touchdown

Another rookie has his first career touchdown. Ray Davis punched in a 3-yard touchdown run.

Bills recover Javon Solomon's strip sack on Mac Jones - 6:21 4th quarter

Rookie defensive end Javon Solomon got his first career sack and it resulted in a turnover. Solomon slapped the ball away from backup quarterback Mac Jones and it was recovered by Casey Toohill at the Jaguars' 21-yard line.

Buffalo Bills 40, Jacksonville Jaguars 10: Tyler Bass makes field goal

Buffalo didn't gain a first down but still came away with points as Tyler Bass made a 43-yard field goal.

Jaguars turn it over on downs - 9:58 4th quarter

Casey Toohill sacked Trevor Lawrence on first down and Lawrence threw incomplete on fourth-and-10 from the Jaguars' 32-yard line.

Sam Martin finally punts for Bills - 11:55 4th quarter

There was a Sam Martin sighting. Buffalo went three-and-out and Martin punted 49 yards to the Jaguars' 17-yard line. Buffalo's Ja'Marcus Ingram was flagged for unnecessary roughness and Jacksonville will start at its 32-yard line.

Von Miller sacks Trevor Lawrence as Jaguars turn ball over on downs - 14:09 4th quarter

The Jaguars got to the Bills' 7-yard line and came away with zero points. Offensive tackle Walker Little committed two false start penalties, pushing Jacksonville back to a fourth-and-17 from the Bills' 17. Von Miller sacked Trevor Lawrence for a 10-yard loss as Jacksonville turned it over on downs.

Buffalo Bills 37, Jacksonville Jaguars 10: Tyler Bass makes field goal

Buffalo failed to score a touchdown for the first time in the game. Josh Allen completed to Mack Hollins for 16 yards, scrambled for 13 yards and James Cook added an 13-yard run on the drive. Allen's third-down pass in the back of the end zone was incomplete and Tyler Bass made a 27-yard field goal.

Buffalo Bills 34, Jacksonville Jaguars 10: Trevor Lawrence throws touchdown to Brenton Strange

Jacksonville's put together a touchdown drive on the opening possession of the second half. Trevor Lawrence completed to Christian Kirk for 18 yards to cross midfield and Tank Bigsby picked up 2 yards on fourth-and-1. Kirk made a 24-yard catch and Damar Hamlin was flagged for unnecessary roughness to set up first-and-goal from the 6. Lawrence capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown to Brenton Strange.

Halftime score: Buffalo Bills 34, Jacksonville Jaguars 3

That was almost a perfect half of football for the Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen threw four touchdowns and Damar Hamlin got his first career interception. Allen completed 22 of 28 passes for 247 yards and the four TDs. Buffalo has five touchdowns on five offensive possessions. The Bills have 288 yards of offense to the Jaguars' 70 yards.

Buffalo Bills 34, Jacksonville Jaguars 3: Josh Allen throws touchdown to Ty Johnson

Stop me if you heard this before. The Bills scored a touchdown.

It has become a laughingstock of a game in Buffalo as the Bills are now 34-3 with 19 seconds left in the first half after Josh Allen’s fourth TD pass, this one a 16-yarder to Ty Johnson.

The Bills have scored touchdowns on all five of their possessions, Allen has 247 yards passing and the Bills have 288 yards of total offense.

Ja'Marcus Ingram sacks Trevor Lawrence - 1:12 2nd quarter

Jacksonville picked up one first down and on third-and-10, Ja'Marcus Ingram sacked Trevor Lawrence for an 8-yard loss. Logan Cooke punted 48 yards and Brandon Codrington returned it 19 yards to the Bills' 38.

Buffalo Bills 27, Jacksonville Jaguars 3: Josh Allen throws TD to Khalil Shakir

Following a Damar Hamlin’s first career interception - on a Monday night, no less - the Bills took possession at the Jacksonville 41, and it took only five plays to hit paydirt, this time with Josh Allen throwing a perfect 27-yard TD pass to Khalil Shakir on a third-and-9 play.

That’s four possessions and four touchdowns for the Bills who look unstoppable.

Damar Hamlin intercepts Trevor Lawrence - 4:13 2nd quarter

Damar Hamlin got his career interception. The Bills safety intercepted Trevor Lawrence's pass that was overthrown intended for Brian Thomas Jr. Hamlin returned the interception 19 yards to the Jaguars' 41-yard line.

Buffalo Bills 20, Jacksonville Jaguars 3: Keon Coleman scores first career touchdown

The Bills’ offense has so far been unstoppable as they made it three touchdowns on three possessions. This time it was an eight-play, 68-yard march with Josh Allen hitting Keon Coleman with a perfect 24-yard touchdown pass on a crossing route. It was a great play design, and Coleman, who had played only a few snaps to that point, beat his man clean.

Allen made the big play to keep the march alive as he tucked the ball on a designed QB run and converted a third-and-11 with a 12-yard run. The Bills are doing anything they want on offense so far as they now have 208 yards.

Buffalo Bills 13, Jacksonville Jaguars 3: Cam Little makes field goal

Jacksonville was desperate for a score and while a touchdown was preferable, it did manage a Cam Little 41-yard field goal after a promising drive died in the red zone.

The Jaguars had the ball for 14 plays and they converted two third downs and a fourth down along the way, that coming early when Travis Etienne rushed for two yards up the middle to keep the drive alive.

This was a nice response from the Jaguars as Trevor Lawrence certainly started looking comfortable throwing the ball.

End of 1st quarter: Buffalo Bills 13, Jacksonville Jaguars 0

It's been a beatdown through one quarter. Buffalo has outgained Jacksonville 140-19. Josh Allen completed 11 of 14 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Buffalo Bills 13, Jacksonville Jaguars 0: Josh Allen throws touchdown to Dalton Kincaid

After their game-opening touchdown drive, Buffalo’s defense forced a quick three-and-out and the Bills took possession at their own 35 after a 22-yard punt return by Brandon Codrington.

And once again, Josh Allen was nearly flawless in directing another touchdown drive, this one 65 yards in 11 plays, capping it with a six-yard pass to Dalton Kincaid. It was a play where Allen extended the down with his pocket awareness, and Kincaid extending his route to get open before making a very nice catch.

Kincaid also had a big 28-yard reception earlier in the possession, and the Bills caught a bit of a break right before the touchdown when a holding penalty on Spencer Brown was offset by a holding penalty in the end zone by the Jaguars.

Jaguars go three-and-out - 8:37 1st quarter

Jacksonville's offense didn't have the same opening drive success. Trevor Lawrence completed to Travis Etienne for 1 yard and then threw two incompletions. Logan Cooke punted 59 yards but Brandon Codrington returned it 22 yards to the Bills' 35.

Buffalo Bills 6, Jacksonville Jaguars 0: James Cook scores on dominant opening drive

The Bills hate losing the coin flip to start a game because they love getting the ball in the third quarter. However, they made good use of their first possession as they drove 70 yards in 10 well-scripted plays with James Cook scoring on a six-yard run around left end. Tyler Bass’ extra point was blocked, though, so the lead is 6-0.

Josh Allen started the possession with a 19-yard pass to James Cook, and a few plays later, facing fourth-and-3 at the Jaguars 44 he tossed a quick pass to wide open Khalil Shakir for 12 yards. And then on a third-and-5 from the 15, Allen ran up the middle through a big hole on a keeper to get the first down.

Buffalo native Joe Andreessen to make NFL debut

It was big news at the end of training camp when the former Lancaster High School and University at Buffalo standout bucked the odds and made the Bills’ 53-man roster. After being inactive for the first two games, Andreessen is up tonight because the Bills have an injury depletion at linebacker with the loss of Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard.

Andreessen will most likely play on special teams only, but he is the backup middle linebacker if anything happens to starter Baylon Spector.

As for the inactives, they are Bernard, cornerback Taron Johnson, offensive lineman Ryan Van Demark, safety Mike Edwards, and linebacker Edufuan Ulofoshio.

The Jaguars inactives are S Darnell Savage, TE Evan Engram, DE Myles Cole, OL Javon Foster, OL Cole Van Lanen, DT Esezi Otomewo, and DT Jordan Jefferson.

Will the Bills’ passing game have an impact?

Josh Allen isn’t complaining about his pedestrian passing numbers through two weeks because the most important thing to him is Buffalo’s 2-0 record.

Still, with only 42 pass attempts combined in the victories over Arizona and Miami, this is by far the least amount of throwing he’s done to start a season.

In his previous five years as the starter (as a rookie in 2018 he did not start the opener), Allen totaled 67, 81, 67, 69 and 78 pass attempts, so that’s a massive difference. And for comparison, the Bills won eight the 10 games they played in the first two weeks of the last five years.

This season, with NFL defenses making it their No. 1 mission to take away chunk plays, the Bills have had to work underneath in the passing game, but they’ve also made a conscious decision to try to establish the running game, and that is also playing a major role in the lack of pass attempts.

Again, Allen has no complaints.

“If you’re focused on stats and what’s going on, it’s frustrating,” he said. “In terms of winning football games, it’s not. It’s just whatever helps us score and move the ball and score when it matters. That’s all we’re caring about right now.”
