Buffalo Bills sign former Pac-12 star with short NFL resume to fill need at quarterback
The Buffalo Bills need a quarterback to help them get through the final preseason game Saturday afternoon at Highmark Stadium, and it appears according to NFL Network that Anthony Brown is the choice.
Brown entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing by the Baltimore Ravens out of Oregon, after he had begun his college career at Boston College. In 2021 he started all 14 games for Oregon and led the Pac-12 Conference in completions (250), attempts (390) and yards (2,989).
Anthony Brown appeared in two games in 2022
After joining the Ravens he was cut at the end of preseason, then was signed to the practice squad where he remained most of the year. He appeared in a game Dec. 11 against the Steelers because Lamar Jackson was out, and his replacement, Tyler Huntley, got hurt.
Brown then started the season finale against the Bengals and completed 19 of 44 passes for 286 yards with no TDs and two interceptions as Baltimore lost 27-16. He was cut at the end of 2023 training camp and was out of the NFL last season.
In January he signed with the Raiders but was cut over the weekend.
With Mitchell Trubisky sidelined by a knee injury, Brown will join Ben DiNucci, who was signed last week, for the game against the Panthers because Sean McDermott has already announced that Josh Allen will not play.
In all likelihood, the Bills will scour the waiver wire when final cuts are made next Tuesday to see if a better option becomes available, especially since Trubisky may not be ready to serve as the backup on opening day Sept. 8.
